If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

A possible solution (suggested on the Canopus forums, confirmed by Canopus Support) is to go via a 4 wire connector: use a 6-pin to 4-pin cable + 4 pin to 6 pin converter.
This way you loose the power cables, making it possible to use the rear DV connector in combination with a power supply.
(But I think they will get quite a lot of 'blown' ADVC110 )

I got notification from my store that Canopos hasn't found any issue with my ADVC110. Tech support then hinted at a possible power issue with my PC.
However, the device misbehaved both when connected to my firewire host, as when daisychained to my external firewire harddisk (in this case, I suspect, the power comes from the harddrive power).
Just to be on the safe side, I have ordered the external powersupply as well.
The ADVC110 is said to arrive back to me today, so I'm hoping that with the external supply everything will be fine.

I got the device back, and also got the power supply.
Now, it works perfectly: it switches input when it should, it doesn't hang like before, ...
(it is connected with a 9-pin to 4-pin cable, using the front DV port)
So, if - as Canopus say - there is nothing wrong with the device, how come it didn't work when powered through firewire?
I tried it on my firewire host (Indigita idt804pci) and daisychained to my firewire harddisk (Lacie D2 Extreme). In both situations, it didn't work...
