Can anyone tell me the best capture size for recording to PAL VCR.

What quality ? VHS or SVHS ?
It is said that VHS has a horizontal resolution of about 200 pixels and svhs up to 400 pixels.
So for VHS SIF should be ok better you double the lines to 576 because of the interlacing.
Try SVCD-resolution for a SVHS-system.

The best quality when recording to a VHS desk will be when using interlaced video. For PAL these are your options;

Natual video: (no highly detailed graphics): 352x576

CG video (video WITH detailed graphics): 704x576

Natural video can have graphics like titles & such, you should use larger fonts for the titles and don't try to use highly detailed graphics.

352x576 ?? The screen in capture is stretched vertically ??? Do you mean 352x288 ??

SIF ?? dont see that one have cif and qcif

Full sized video frames for PAL are either 720x576 or 704x576, depending on the capture card. Half height frames, 288, lose half their vertical information.

SIF stands for standard image format and means a resolution of 352x288, the same as CIF (don´t know what it exactly means).

Don´t worry about the vertical stretch. If you are using the matrox hardware mjpeg codec the image will automatically be displayed with correct 4:3. If the display on your computer-monitor is vertical stretched make sure to enable "always scale to fullscreen" in your dvd-max options, so the display on your tv will be correct.
