  • Want to return to 1x burn speeds, I think

I have a Lite-On LDW-411S DVD burner and recently upgraded the firmware because I could only burn at 1x. Well, now I can burn at 2x and 4x with Fujis and Verbatims. But, my resulting DVDs aren't playing well and have high rates of PI/PO erros when scanned with KProbe.

Is there any way I can undo the firmware upgrade? Maybe another flash with older firmware? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I have the same burner but I flashed it to burn a 8x. There are lots of tools to change firmware. check cdfreaks they should have links to them

I sincerely doubt that flashing the drive with 8x firmware, which is definately not OEM for this drive, will improve burn quality at 2x or 4x speed.
To my knowledge there is no possibility of reverting to an older firmware version.

Not much help now but for future reference (and because I screw up so often) before I am about to make a change to any of my programmes or add another, I always Ghost and revert if necessary.

That has nothing to do with flashing any Bios.

Agreed. However my point is that if there was a ghost image to revert to there would be no need to find a way to undo the firmware upgrade.

Only a suggestion for the future.

Actually there is a lot of evidence that changing 411's to 811's firmwares does increase burning quality and speed(at slower as well as 8x speeds). probably because the do more calibrateing testing for 811's on different media.(more firmware updates)

I will vouch for the 811 firmware on a 411 for improving quality at 4x...I have not bothered to even try it 8x(have not even bough any 8x media yet)

But the conversion must be done with the correct conversion tool which creates calibration information for the faster modes. eg use the "zebra mod"

I wasn't aware of that. In fact all the better that it works out so well. Well, let me rephrase my remark then by stating that it is in general potentially dangerous to update with hacked, non OEM or non product-specific firmware.

Proof of that came once more yesterday when I wrecked an old Trident Mainboard by flashing it with a closely related but not product-specific BIOS version. So much for experimenting!
