  • Personal HOWTO: PVR + Win2K

    Hello,

I wanted to pass this along to anyone interested in installing the Hauppage WinTV-PVR under Win2k. From my experience, I had to follow a certain order for the WinTV2000 app to work (would not recognize the MPEG functionality... kind of important).

Basically, here is what I did:

1-Loaded WinTV2000 off of the PVR CD directly. Do not use the main setup program, as the drivers are not loaded and the install options become restricted.

2-Unpacked the Win2K beta drivers by downloading and running w2kdrv307.exe (http://www.hauppage.com/html/sw_pvr_pci.htm).

3-Downloaded and ran the driver/application update pvrpcidrv14.exe. At this point, you have all pieces in place.

    4-Reboot the machine

5-Step through the Plug and Play windows.

That is what I did to get my PVR working under Win2k. Remember to follow that order or the WinTV2000 app only recognizes/allows AVI captures.

If you end up doing something out of order, run the hcwclear.exe, double check everything is removed (Device Manager and the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet), and follow the process again.

I have not done too much tinkering with the other apps, but the TVScheduler seems to work fine.

All seems to be working better than expected. I especially like the ability to capture past the FAT16/FAT32 barriers (as long as you are using NTFS). This is nice because there are no more spanning issues.

OK, that's it. Hope it helps someone.

    Hows the quality?

Can it do VCD format captures?
    SVCD?
    MPEG2 at 4 or 8 Mbps?

Can it do YUV captures to feed HuffYUV?

    --wally.

Quality is very good, if not excellent.

      VCD-Yes

      SVCD-Yes

MPEG2 captures can go from 500kbps to 12Mbps (CQ or VBR).

As in many situations, the software is not an 'out-of-the-box' solution. Hauppage has an FTP site where you can download items like how-to's, reg settings, and similar. Once you learn the tricks, you can burn VCDs/SVCDs direct from capture.

Like the other WinTVs, it has the same AVI capture ability (slightly better). This means you can recompress with Divx, Huffyuv, MS MPEG4, or whatever you want. The only item I should mention here is that you have to shut off overlay mode for full frame capture (other folks are able to keep overlay on).

There are other features like a TV tunner, radio tunner and IR hookup with remote. They are nifty, but more of a fun feature. For example, you can:
      -Capture radio into MP3
-Record a TV show using a scheduler
      -Use it pause live TV

They are all neat, but not really what I need. The 'extra' item that is nice is that there is a SDK along with an OCX. You can use VB or C/C++ to create your own video apps.

I am not sure if you are in PAL or NTSC. All my results are NTSC. From what I understand, PAL users have some issues.

This site has some basic info on it:
