Hi Doc,

I notice that you are also using Asus P3BF running at above 600Mzh or so. I wanted to do direct capture to Divx and thinking of overclocking my board ( currently at 650Mzh with 100FSB ), how should I do it ?? Would my G400TV sitting in the AGP be okay with the extra speed ?? Do I need a new CPU fan ?? Please help me out there.

Have you tried it without OC'ing yet? You're better off not doing it if at all possible.

Generally speaking Celerons OC better than PIII's (many PIII's are "locked" to prevent overclocking) and Durons OC better than almost anything. Depends mainly on your motherboard.

Celerons have the virtue of being relatively cheap, so if you burn one out experimenting it isn't a terrible tragedy.

Overclocking is not for the timid but if you're very careful it could give you modest to good performance boost. As to how your specific hardware config will react is anyone's guess.

Hi Ted,

I've got a G400tv Marvel card working
just fine on an overclocked P3BF.

My system consists of the following:

Asus P3BF BX m/board
256MB RAM
PIII 700@933
Matrox G400tv
Soundblaster AWE64 gold (ISA)
20GB Maxtor OS/system drive
30GB IBM capture drive + Promise ultra66 card

I'm unaware of any system problems related to the
overclocking. Captures with the Matrox hardware
MJPEG codec or by YUY2 show no observable problems
either at 100MHz or 133MHz FSB.

As Doc stated, its best not to overclock if you don't have to. That said, the key thing
to watch out for when overclocking an NLE
system is the PCI bus speed which should be at or very near 33MHz.

If you really need the extra horsepower then you could try upping your FSB to 133MHz but note:

1. your RAM should be capable of running at 133MHz
2. set the BIOS PCI bus speed divider to 1/4(133/4 = 33MHz)
3. make sure the AGP bus speed is 133/2 = 89MHz
3. your processor may need a little extra core voltage for a successful overclock
4. get a good cooling heatsink/fan (the globalwin FOP32-1 is a economical unit with great performance for Intel FCPGA chips)

I haven't try to overclock it yet, and I know my rams are PC133 so that should be okay. I am just not too sure how the G400TV will handle extra speed. Anyway, I was able to free up some more harddisk space yesterday so I might not need to capture directly to divx.
