Ok....got some graphs compiled and on one page. They came from various sources and includes the graph maximo4usaRT linked to;

See something consistant in the HPT graphs? It even shows up on a HotRod100 card, which isn't even a RAID.
As noted in my commentary these variabilities in throughput seen with the HPT chipped controllers stands out starkly in comparison to the FT100's relatively smooth graph. Those wide swings in throughput are not a good sign.
A 3Ware card shows a graph similar to the FT100, so it looks to my old eyes like there are some problems with the HPT chipset or the drivers or BOTH.
