    What would work best for compressing NSTC stuff to formats like mpeg4. It is my understanding that it passes already deinterlaced fields to the codec, so that capturing at 704x480@~15fps wouldn't really lose much information compared to 704x480@29.97fps.

    Or would it be necessary to do some deinterlace filtering a bit to get the 15fps to look as good as the 29.97, if it is possible?

    Actually NTSC video has 2 fields x 29.970 frames per second or 59.94 FIELDS per second. Delacing this would still result in 29.97 FRAMES per second. 15 frames per second would have a noticeable flicker.
