While I've never seen the spec for the 80-pin ATA66 or ATA100 cables, 18" is the specified maximum length for DMA enabled transfers for EIDE. I doubt higher transfer speed will allow longer cables. This is what got SCSI in trouble -- as the speeds went up the maximum cable length went down to the point its difficult to use any external devices and why ultimately we'll end up with some version of Firewire or SerialATA.
