  • 128Mb Power Colour Radeon 9800SE All In Wonder

    Hi All,

I am just about to purchase the Radeon 9800SE All In Wonder with TV Tuner from the U.K.

The TV system in the U.K. is UHF PAL I and in over here it is VHF and UHF PAL B.

My question is; would the tuner be Multi PAL or just PAL I. I have put this question to the supplyers in the U.K. but have had no reply so far.

My Marvel also came from the U.K. (assembled in Ireland) and had no problems with the TV Tuner.

    Regards,

    Debbie

I am allready using the Radeon 9600XT (no tv tuner) and I can say it's just exelent. I'm capturing software mpeg-2 without droping a single frame.

This what I have managed to find so far:

See the part where it says:
TV Available Formats ( By Tuner Hardware ID )

        Philips FQ1216ME/P PAL I/B/G/D/K SECAM D/K/L

        and

TV Available Formats ( Radeon ):
The following table listed supported format for Radeon family

        All-in-Wonder Radeon AGP / PCI + PAL / SECAM

It appears that the All-in-Wonder Radeon have a multi PAL standard type TV tuner.

I been playing about with the Radeon 9800SE All In Wonder i got a couple of days ago.

For what you get, the price is quite good. The capture quality is good and quite stable on composite.

I did have some problems with the TV tuner. It kept crashing the machine every so often untill I removed the Multimedia Center software that came with it leaving jut the capture and video drivers and using third party video capturig sofware, the WinDVR after that no crashes so far.

It is a must to have SP2 installed otherwise there will be no TV stations displayed. I am using it on a machine with a 2Gig P 4 and 256 Mb DDR RAM. While the captured movie is very smooth playing and perfect lip sync, the picture in the preview window is slightly jerky but this will perhaps depend on what is inside the machine hardware wise. Included is also a programable "massive" remote control which I haven't used yet.

All in all I consider this card a good buy for the capture qulaity it delivers. My only problem has been the configuration and capturing with the tuner but that could hav been a local problem.

The tuner is a Philips FQ1216ME/L PAL I/B/G/D/K SECAM D/K/L and in this part of the world we are on PAL B/G VHF and UHF. I was xpecting the Philips FQ1216ME/P PAL I/B/G/D/K SECAM D/K/L but using this tuner there are no apperent tuning problems.

So there you are Traveller I have posted as promised.

            Very informative
Great thx for the whole comment

            What makes me wonder:
It is a must to have SP2 installed
It probably means it doesn't work on my favourite Windows 98

            Thx again Debbie
I am pretty sure many people here are interested in this comment

According to its OS support it should also work on Windows 98se and also on WindowsME.

However I had problems on WinXP regardind the TV stations and frequent crashes untill I installed SP2. Since then I made a fresh installation of the OS and SP2 has not been included and the TV stations have also appeared.

I should have made a FRESH INSTALLATION OF THE OS IN THE FIRST PLACE. However the rest still applies, at least on my gear.

                a FRESH INSTALLATION
This is always a pain-so many programs installed, all have been configured etc.
It is an example how Windows structure can be poor and sensitive for any user's activity.
There are no such problems in Linux fortunately.

Thx for the info Debbie and I hope you have a lot of fun with your new card

                  PAL 60 & NTSC

                  Regards Debbie from Sweden!
I was wondering if you have tried capturing any NTSC or PAL60 VHS with your ATI card. I was wondering also how the playback is for NTSC DV. I find that with my nVidia all in one Personal Cinema, it can only play & record PAL60 in B&W. It's very difficult to record NTSC VHS with it and playback of NTSC VHS mpeg2 files is quite poor. My Matrox G400 graphic card on the other hand gives very fine playback of NTSC but I think that it and my Compro capture card do not get along well with each other but that's another problem.
