This is the first time I'm smart rendering a NTSC clip. I have never had any problems with PAL but NTSC will not smart render although I am using identical properties.
This reminded me of an MSP7 bug that I've simply forgotten about, and never reported. I just went and tested it again, so this bug has persisted across all three service packs, at least on my computer, at any rate.
Put a short DV clip onto the timeline, then go to the "Create Video File" dialogue and press the "Options..." button. This brings up the dialogue box with the "Video Editor" tab on top. If you press the "Cropping..." button, change nothing in the dialogue box that comes up, but merely press the "Okay" button to close it, this apparently toggles some value that will produce one of three results on my computer when I immediately go to save the file...
One is that I'll get an error saying it can't produce the desired frame size.
Another is that it will re-render.
And the third is that it will smart render.
Since upgrading to MSP7 and first discovering this problem, I've since NEVER pressed the "Cropping..." button when saving a file. This has eliminated the problem for me.
But, since (on my computer, anyway), I can toggle whatever that value is by opening the "Cropping..." dialogue box, you might want to try that. Also, alternately checking and unchecking (with successive tries to Smartrender your file) the "Keep original size" checkbox, it will toggle some other value involved with this bug, and possibly get you into Smartrender mode on one of your tries to save the file.
I don't know whether I'm reading you right, but if the template options and the Create options are different, it is normal that Smart render won't work, because it has to re-render from A to Z.
