dvd standards

Hello,

I'm looking for a portable DVD writer (for use with a laptop), and have started this thread:

In my desktop I currently have a Toshiba SDM1612 (reads -R, -RW, -RAM) and a Plextor PX708 (writes +R, +RW, -R, -RW).
Looking at the global market (not only portable), I have the impression that more and more writers begin to appear that support writing DVD-RAM discs. Is it gaining popularity?

Which would you go for? Or are there other interesting models?

Can USB supply enough power to reliably burn a DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL?
The reason I ask is that IBM (the only portable USB drive I found that can write DVD-RAM) makes its drive readonly when USB powered... It doesn't even support DL, and this is the slowest drive of the ones I'm considering...!

Lacie so far seems to have the best package (+RW DL, -RW, fully USB powered), but are they good?

I was also thinking a Panasonic UJ 845 B (+R DL, -RW, -RAM)

1. All disc types, except there's no cartridge DVD-RAM support:

Thanks for the slidirect link! They seem to have the best drives so far (digistor or a panasonic in an enclosure),
i.e. this external digistore model:

Would this combo be possible?

Are the Digistor branded drives the same as the Panasonic ones? Or is it better to opt for the Panasonic branded one?

I suspect the Digistor is a re-branded Panasonic drive.

So either would probably work equally well.
