  • SMPTE for video editing on PC???

I know my way in and out of PC hardware, but digital video is a whole other ballgame for me. My father asked me if the Matrox Marvel G450 eTV supports SMPTE for his editing or whatnot. I took a look around and it looks like a software feature.
I'm relatively clueless on this though, so some help couldn't hurt.

Well, I'm not sure if SMPTE is implemented on any consumer-level card (or even if it's necessary). As I recall, SMPTE is a timecode written to videotape independently of the actual video information itself, and is a way of maintaining accurate frame information.

So in short, the answer to your question is "no", but I'm sure there is a lot more to it, and I look forward to hearing about it from one of the regulars.

Timecode IS written to DV files and you can use a DV capture card (Pyro, SIIG etc.) in the same system with a Marvel or eTV.

In this mode you can capture DV, edit in MSPro and then export to analog in the format of your choice (MPEG-1/2/4, DivX, DV whatever) using the DVDMax engine of the Matrox card OR export to DV tape or both.
