DJ has a right to express an opinion, but I don't fully agree with that opinion.

Sure Ulead may be catching up in *some* minor areas.

However, many of the "other" major NLE's have lacked - and continue to lack - the ability to edit MPEG video formats.

Most *still* don't have that ability, which is becoming increasingly important now that the HDV and MPEG-4 formats are leaping to the forefront.

The inability to *NATIVELY* edit MPEG is a major core technology deficiency.

Ulead MediaStudio Pro and Ulead VideoStudio both have the ability to edit MPEG and have been doing so - for years - while the other so-called "major NLEs" have continued to lag.

Not to start an argument, but I was reffering to the features that Doc mentioned for MSP 8. They all have been adopted by other NLE's for a long time. Pinnacle has had the abilty to edit IPB MPEG2 natively since the nineties and since version 6 of Liquid been editing HDV natively. Final cut 5 does the same. Like I said there must be a lot of good and inovative things that were not mentioned. No flames please.

No flames, but then you are also short on a lot of info on the new version. Pretty soon Ulead will likely be releasing more of this from NDA, and several of these items are unique.

        Make your judgements then

Also; some of these features are in other programs but the rub is how they work. EX: one thing that works much easer in MSPro 8 than in Premiere Pro is applying transitions.

In Premiere Pro the procedure is to trim a Head or Tail "handle" from each clips edge (about 1 extra second each), align them then drop the transition. You have to be accurate here as if you miss the alignment "mark" or don't trim enough it's applied to just one clip and won't work correctly. Now you adjust its position relative to both clips in the Effects Control Window by sliding its icon left/right.

In MSPro 8 things are just a bit easier. You do a straight trim (no handles) then just drop both clips with an overlap. POOF, the default transition applies itself.

The transition is applied with or without an automatic audio crossfade (linear or logarithmic), according to what you set up in the MSPro 8 Preferences. The default transition can also be changed in the MSPro 8 Preferences

To change a transition from the defaut you just drag & drop from the Production Library.

You can also use the Storyboard to import a whole bin full of files with default transitions automatically applied with the duration you want (frame accurate), as well as synching to timeline cues, auto audio crossfades etc. plus a few new tricks I can't discuss.

DJ, I hope you didn't consider my post a "flame" because it wasn't intended as such.

I merely expressed my own opinion - as you did - concerning Ulead MediaStudio Pro.

We can agree to disagree, which is no big deal.

The news of the new pending version has got me fairly excited.
I treasure my UMSP7, with the only exception of my admiration is the MPEG2 encoding engine. (I'll probably always use Debugmodes frameserver to CCESP=>SpruceDVDMaestro. )
Any new version of UMSP will be warmly welcomed here

No I didn't consider it a flame. We all have our favorites and will root for them no matter what. Me, I currently use Liquid Edition since version 5 and all the features mentioned by Doc were there at least since version 4. Got it for $55.00 when they dropped Premiere. Now I know most people don't like Pinnacle and with good reason but if one gives Edition a go, as long as you understand it, you would be amazed at the capabilities it has to offer. In fact there is no difference in the software for all Liquid versions, its the same as that use by CNN, ABC and BBC etc. Only difference is the hardware. Pinnacles problem is its poor marketting and notoriously poor customer support.

Since they are being bought out by Avid, its possible that it is the end of the line for Edition. I would not have a problem switching to MSP 8 if it offers more.
