  • Windows ME question

    Hi!

I've seen on the IBM ViaVoice (speech recognition) site that IBM recommends 300 MHz minimum processors for all versions of Windows 9x, NT, 2000, except ME for which they recommend a minimum of 600 MHz. As speech recognition is a highly CPU-intensive application, this would seem to imply that ME handles maths data at half the speed of all the other versions of Windows. If this is so, it would mean that video rendering under ME would also be slower than with the other versions of Windows.

Has anyone observed this? (I still use 98SE on the grounds that it ain't broke): in fact, on my latest computer, it came with ME installed, but I "downgraded" it to 98SE, as being visibly more "user-friendly" after 2 days

Just a little oddity, but my IWill KK266-R plays nicer with WinMe than Win98. I have no idea if this has to do with VIA or not.

The IDE performance is right on between the two. I can use the Win2K RAID driver and get twice the performance than what was happening in Win98 (using Sandra to test).

I'd have to agree with AndrewDV on this. I also have the KK266-R and using both Win98 and Win98SE stability was, well... crap! However both WinME and Win2k seem good on the board. I'm still getting a few troubles with corrupt frames, but I think I'm getting to the bottom of it...

Don't even go near ME. Your assumption that it's slower is correct, although in most functions this only amounts to 10% ro so. Disk writes ARE slower and in gerneral it's not as clean running as Win98SE.

If you're going to update go all the way and get Win2K Pro.

          Doc

Thanks. I had no intention of going ME, but it still ain't broke, so I ain't ganning the 2000 way, either (especially as drivers are not available for half my hardware). It was just curiosity that made me ask.

Is Win 2K really that much better than Win 98? In what way? Faster? Stabler? I have an RT2000 (which I'm probably changing to an RT2500) and I'm running it on Win 98. Should I switch to Win 2K? Will it make a big difference?
