Ok - in that case - no matter what we all say - I guess the only correct answer is for the shop to refund you and you arriving with the PC under the arm wanting to spend money on a capture solution as long as they can demonstrate it working in combination with the FW800.

Let us knwow what the outcome is and wich device if any is happy with the LaCie in FW800 mode.

Given the past experience, I'm a bit reluctant to go the firewire route... (Canopus states that their hardware should be compatible with XP SP2)

As I prefer an external device, USB seems the way to go... But if I can't find a reliable USB (is this a contradiction? ) capture device, I'll have to go for some internal device. Canopus also has a USB device (mpegpro evp)...

I kinda like the Creative concept (soundcard + capture device in one), but it turns out not to work with software other then what is supplied. So this rules that out.

The problem with USB devices are that they all require very specific drivers - there simply is no standard for video capturing via USB, so you are back to square 1 ........................ my guess is you are going to be hard pressed to find any USB capture device supplied with drivers that will work with any capture app you care to mention.

IMO I would first choose the video app with a comfortable UI that you like, and then from there see if it can handle USB devices - and if so which ones.

If you are hell bent on capturing analogue stuff, why not use your DV cam (you have one? - and is it working where the ADVC110 failed?) to do the same job as the ADVC110 via the usual analogue pass-through function on the cam?

Yes... but I wonder if it is not possible for the usb capture manufacturer to offer drivers, making it work with a lot of software, instead of including a modified software with their product...

Nope...
my brother has a Sony DV, and while we planned on connecting it to my PC, we never tried it.. Personally, I don't have or need a video camera...

Seeing these problems would make it interesting to see if the DV camera will work. If it doesn't, some alternative would be handy. (to mention the Creative solution: it has a firewire port for DV captures, but connects via USB to the computer)

One thing to consider when using WinXP SP2: some devices won't work with it that DO work under SP1.

This happened with my Panasonic cameras. The fix was to go to the M$ Knowledge Base and search for updated IEEE-1394 drivers or patches for IEEE-1394 "issues".

In my case I found one of each and applying them fixed my IEEE-1394 connectivity problems.

Wouldn't you know this kind of stuff hardly ever shows up in their "recommended patches" on the Windows Updates page

I remember having downloaded some patch, but to no avail. However, I can't seem to find those things on Microsoft Knowledgebase anymore...

I have two SP2 IEEE-1394 patches here if you want to try 'em. They're about 350k each.
