  • SVCD Guide

I use a G400 (Marvel) to capture from my Hi-8 Camcorder.

I wanted to transfer my video onto a CD format I could play on my DVD player, so I set out to learn how to create SVCD's.

Easy, I thought - oops! After a lot of trawling through several forums & asking a lot of questions, I've finaly got a method that works quite well (to my eyes anyway.

It is developed to resolve quite fast motion scenes at the expense of encoder time.

It isn't perfect by any means, but it does work & I will tweak it as an ongoing project, oh and it uses freeware tools as well!

Give it a try and see what you think. Please give me some feedback at the Email link on the page and let me know:
    a)what you think,
    b) if it works for you
    c) if you have any suggestions as to how to improve it ...PLEASE!

Ups... TMPGEnc works perfectly with VDR files. Version 12b-12e does not recognise *.AVI files if you create them as a part of frameserving process. Probably your information is correct only for 12a.

Why do you encode audio separately? TMPGEnc perfectly does it together with video encoding. If you have sync problems, just export audio as a wav file and use it as sound input for TMPGEnc...

TMPGenc templates works fine, what changes do you have in your templates?

          FM, Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, I use 12a (recommended for a reason I forget now, probably the frameserving issue & that it fully supports MPEG2 unlike 12e)
I'll give 12b (or whatever) a try with VDR - thanks for th advice.

Some very minor tweaks in the template based on one supplied by Leon at another forum to help with the high motion - I also crop 16 all round for my TV.

The separate A/V encoding is as I tend to use I-author which requires it - but for nero, etc your quite right - they might as well be done together.

I'll update my guide again sometime soon, but as I said in my original post - it ain't perfect, but it does work, the aim was for a newbie (like me only a few weeks ago) to use it to get started then they can build upon it themselves.

          Cheers

            Nezza,

Are you able to play your SVCD's on your PC with the Matrox DVD player?

I don't use the matrox player as I've a Hollywood card installed, but yes, they play fine on that.

                rodgreen,
I couldn't play SVCD with MatroxDVD, but PowerDVD works fine for me, even with a CD-R player (not only with DVD, I mean)

                Hope it helps.

                  Fred H

Tried that but it crashed my system. I think it's something to do with the dreaded VIA chipset ....

I've heard WinDVD works too. Trying to locate a demo at the moment.

                  Thanks for your reply.
