I'm really new at video, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

The channel that has the most shows I cap on also has interferrence from the over the air channel of the same number. The cable company knows, but isn't going to do anything. I'm wondering if there exists a device that will go between the wall and my capture card and remove or reduce the interferrence noise?

Would the devices mentioned for cleaning up old VCR tape noise work for this? That would be great to solve two problems at once.

Also, I'm looking for an inexpensive solution (<$50) since this is just a hobby and nothing I can make money off of to justify a lot of expense.

    Thanks,

    Michelle

I have the same problem with noise on my cable reception. Sometimes, I can get rid of the noise by fiddling with the connection, sometimes I try seperating my data and power lines.

Try to keep your tuner input lines as far away from power lines as possible. This will help minimize the effect of the natural resonance of harmonic or freq noise of channels most suseptable to this.

As far as I know, there is no specific device, other than a ferite coupling, that will clean all of the noise created at certain freq's by AC power.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, but as I mentioned, the interference is caused by the over the air channel, so your suggestions won't work for me.

      Thanks,

IF the problem is with the cable system there is nothing you can do but continue to complain -- good luck!

However this problem is easily introduced by using a poor quality cable between the converter box and the TV or capture card.

Did you "split" the signal? Often the cable signal is at a low level and if you split, it drops to the level of a strong local station picked up "without an antenna" thus you see the interference. Adding an amplifier (12db) before the splitter fixed this problem for me.

        --wally.

According to the cable company, about half the subscribers in this area have the problem. The channel that the WB is on is competing with a very strong signal from a local station. They _claim_ the WB insists on being on that channel.

Our house has low quality cable through it, which is bizarre since the house is only 4 years old. This makes the problem worse, but there's nothing that can be done short of rewiring the house.

Using the VCR as a tuner helps because it is better shielded than the capture card, but it's still not as good as I'd like since I'm archiving these shows. When I get nostalgic and pull out an ep in 10 years, I want it to look as good as it can.

Could you elaborate more on the amplifier you used? Where would I get one? Could you tell me specifically what I'm looking for in either newbee-speak or terms I can parrot back to the salesman at the store?

          Thanks,

          Michelle

Go to WWW.Google.com and search for Cable TV Amplifier and stand back. I got 44,000 results.

Hehe... That's exactly why I didn't search myself. Web searching is great if you know enough to interpret the results, but when you know nothing about a subject, it really helps to have someone who does narrow it down.

              Thanks,

              Michelle

Well, I decided not to wait and called up Radio Shack. They knew what I was looking for and had one. Unfortunately, it didn't make any difference.

I guess this is a lost cause.

                Thanks,
