  • GPU accelerated video transcoding!

ATI has a beta software using the X1000 series of video cards GPU to speed up video rendering.

ExtremeTech is the Web's top destination for news and analysis of emerging science and technology trends, and important software, hardware, and gadgets.

Question is, when will video editing & DVD authoring apps take advantage of this?

Some have been using the graphics card for a long time. Serious Magic's Ultra 2 and IIRC Canopus XPlode do and so do many effects packages that use OpenGL for certain f/x. The old Matrox RT-2000 realtime card used their G400-Flex's GPU for filtering and 3D f/x.

As for DVD authoring programs; why? IMO it's a waste to spend time coding just for slideshow transitions and the other few effects they actually apply. The time/effort is better spent on the editing software.

Doc, but it's not about some fancy effects, it's about converting from one format to another, DVD/DV -> MPEG4/H.264 for example. Something that could actually be widely used...

DVD authoring packages like Nero6.6 that can start with DV and encode it to MPEG2 are what I was thinking of.

The article's "test" showed as much as a 5:1 speed up over "normal" encode on a high-end Athelon X2.

Okay this is offtopic, but why are you spelling Athlon "Athelon" ?

I was shure, while reading, that these were not your words (the vocabulary I mean) LOL.
