  • DVD Playback problems

During the playback of DVDs I randomly get some hiccups and some corrupted blockups. If I pause Powerdvd and rewind back to those few seconds and play that segment again, I get no mess up, so it seems to be random. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? the disc is brand new, and it happens with every disc at random points, not very often. Sometimes after having one point where it messes up it will play for maybe another 15 minutes then PowerDVD reports it can't even read the disc, so I have to fast forward back to the point I was at and it plays fine.

How much free space is there for the swapfile?

If it's less than 256 or 384 megs then that may be an issue. I've seen too small a swapfile, or not having enough room for the requirements of the player, cause such problems.

A too slow boot drive can also have a similar effect.

Another thing that can do it is if you have a DVD deck on the same IDE cable with a CD player or CD-RW. If the CD player has auto-insert detection turned on it'll frequently poll the system. If the DVD playback is in the midst of a high datarate sequence this can also cause a hiccup.

The same thing effect can cause dropped frames during captures if a CD is on the same cable with your video drive.

My swap file was set to 256mb Min and Max, and I also have 512mb of PC133 RAM. The player is installed to my C drive, which is a 40gb ATA-100 drive. The Swap is set on an ATA-66 drive, but with 512mb RAM i dont think it makes much difference to move to an ATA-100 drive. The DVD drive isn't IDE, its a SCSI-2 DVD-RAM drive, but Auto-Insert Notification is enabled on it and my other SCSI CD-ROM drives, i'll try disabling them to see what happens. Thanks for your suggestions, if anybody still has anything else to say i'm still open for suggestions.
