Sounds like it to me too. Given digital camcorders going mainstream, and editing apps getting easier to use all the time all that was needed to light the fuse was a digital playback medium with sufficient playback time and quality that would play on a DVD deck. DVD-R sure fits that criteria.
Tape has maybe 2 years tops. Then about everything will be going to optical disks of one kind or another.
I myself think DV tapes are also on the short list for replacement. It may be micro-drives or some form of DV optical disk, but something will replace them too.
FMD technology perhaps? Using blue lasers they are now talking about 1 terabyte of storage per disk or card.
