  • Myst220+RRS on 750mhz P3 opinions Please

    Ok everybody gather round
My brother wants a computer so from old parts I am making him one and he wants to capture his old anime videos to cd.
I have some components already such as
    256mb
    Abit BX6R2
    Modem
    Mystique 220
    Canopus Voodoo 1
so would it be feasible for me to change this thing into a video capture box?
I am planning on getting a 750P3 and hes getting a 40 gb HD + CDRW +OS (not sure which one 98se or 2k?)
Any and all opinions are welcome like buy a raid card and get 2 20gb hd stuff like that

Read my 2nd reply in this thread so I don't have to retype it

The G450 eTV will give him a load of options. Go for the PIII/850 minimum if you can. The price differential is almost nothing. You will need a decent slotkey adapter though. There is also a slot1 100mhz bussed 1ghz PIII out there, but finding one may be an issue.

I use the Fasttrak100 RAID cards exclusively. Add a couple of IBM 75GXP's or Maxtor DiamondMax Plus drives & you're in business.

Hmm the RRS can do mpeg 1 but etv cant the concern here is that the etv costs 400 bucks with that he can get a 40gb HD and a CDRW personally I like the options the etv gives and would love it for myself but my bro is totally computer illiterate and doesnt like gaming on computer He will literally crap his pant at the site of a 400 card
Which is why im using spare parts and on the extreme cheap Hes very line of sight person (not sure if I can explain that better) only wants to do some typing and keep his movies from degrading.
but thanks Doc youve sold me on the etv LOL!

Oops re-read your post its looking like the Etv is the way to go i can talk him into getting it and using my system
since I should be getting some scrap parts from an organization thats upgrading so I'll wait and see what I get and if the price drops

Ya pick up a second hand RR-S. It will make backups of his videos just fine. A raid setup is nice but totally not needed for the task. Get the biggest 7200rpm drive that fits your budget, and you will be set. I personally don't know why people always recommend such high tech expensive stuff when someone just asks for something simple!
Damnit Jim I'm a film maker, not a systems tech!
