  • Anyone tried the Mpegg encoder for MSP?

I have downloaded the trial version of the above and wondering if any of you have compared the results of direct encoding using Mpegg v saving the AVI file and then encoding with TMPGEnc?

Unless they've put up a newer version it crashes on encode if used on an Athelon.

Its a lot faster than TMPGenc but in my limited testing I thought TMPGEnc still looked better. Either are far superior to the crappy Ligos supplied with MSP6.

For me quality is king, I only encode once and TMPGenc can batch up a bunch of jobs and run overnight so its slow encode is moot for me.

      Check this post on the WWUG MSPro board;

      http://www.wwug.com/forums/uleadmedi...0425001222.htm

In my tests the DVD Plugin now delivers a lower Q than TMPGEnc does for CBR SVCD. TMPGEnc is still better for VCD and has better VBR bitrate control at this point, but the gap is narrowing considerably.

I haven't finished testing with DVD files.

        Doc

I'm referring to the 'Mpegg' cinemacraft-based encoder not the DVD plugin. I'm assuming there is a difference?

Cinemacraft still think Intel is the only platform out there, and is terribly slow in updating their sw to work on AMD cpus, let alone optimize for them.

However, their encoder is top notch (SP version). The standalone versions would work on Athlon if you encode video only, so no audio. Try and see if that works for the mpegg sw

To be fair to Custom Technology, they produced a new version of CinemaCraft SP/Lite & mpEGG! within a month or so of the Athlon/Duron audio encoding bug being discovered.

              Fair enough.

I was actually responding to wkulecz's Ligos comment. That said the MPegg encoder is nice in some ways, but as noted Cinemacraft still thinks Intel is the only CPU in town.

Given that the Ligos engine is being improved considerably it's kind of a moot issue now. Users have the option of either waiting for a new build of MSPro or getting the DVD Plugin.

Either should be more than satisfactory for 95% of users. In my tests the only place where the new Ligos engine has problems is in VBR bitrate control (an old Ligos issue) and with VCD.

Sorry Doc. Not keeping up with the forum!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll give it a go and see if it suits my needs.

BTW - anyone know when the next version of MSPro is 'due'?
