  • PyroPro to replace My Marvel

Since my G400 is kinda dead for me in Win2k now, I've decided to jump headfirst into full DV and install a PyroProDV firewire solution.

Here's what I'd like to know. Will I only be able to capture to full DV or can I convert it to a less space intensive format on the fly? Does the Pyro work fully in Win2k? Will the Marvel still be able to output the DV stream to the 2nd monitor using DVDMax?

You can only capture DV AVI with the Pyro, there are 3rd party MPEG capture utilities & ME can capture WMV. (Maybe MPEFG as well?)

The Pyro works very well in Windows 2000.

    Marvel DV output?

The data rate of DV is basically the same as your Marvels "best" MJPEG about 13GB an hour.

I don't know if the G400 Marvel DVDmax feature is the same as the G450 dualhead's or not, but the G450 dualhead does not work well with MSP6. It is sweet with Premiere6.

The problem is MSP has two "preview" rendering paths only one of which lets DVDmax activate. Clips in the "source" window play fine out DVDmax, but timeline scrub and single frame advance doesn't play out the DVDmax, while playing a rendered preview does. Ulead tech support had nothing useful to offer when I asked.

On Premiere6 as along as nothing is "active" on DVDmax when Premiere starts up, every playback feature appears to display correctly on the DVDmax feature. You may have to "permute" the "advanced" features for DVDmax settins for best results. The settings needed seem to vary with driver version so I won't try to tell you what is "best".

Having explorer's "preview" hold a DVDmax frame is the biggest problem -- sometimes you have to close the window or move to a different directory to get it to release.

At ~$65 for an OEM G450 dualhead its hard to beat for DV editing despite how PO'd I am at Matrox over the Marvel and RR/G W2K driver issues. I won't stop recommending the G450, but I canceled plans to buy an RT2500 with my tax refund.
