    Conroe Benchmarks

We are about to experience a major increase in computing power at unheard of price points if these early benches prove are any indication.

well, being a long-time Intel fanboy, I was almost gonna change because of the P4s performance over the last couple years... but it looks like thats not gonna happen!

    WOW - a monster indeed!!!

Does look good, but 6 months is a long time. So don't count your eggs to soon

It will be too late for Intel unfortunately, as AMD will soon release it's quad core Opterons which is compatible with the current socket.
Meaning all you have to do is pull out the dual core Opterons and pop in the quad core, keeping your PC alive for th enext few years!

The freaking problem with Intel is with every new chip a new socket is introduced which FORCES you to buy a new motherboard/Memory etc.!

AMD is much better at this now with the Opterons, keeping the archtecture in tact.

          Elie,

Did you look at the benchmarks? Conroe at 2.67 is crushing X2 at 2.8GHz, which I should add isn't even an available part since right now 2.6 is tops for X2.

As you know Operton=X2 so no difference there. AMD is also moving away from socket 939 to AM2.

Finally Athlon64/Opteron is at the end of a long development cycle so I wouldn't expect to see major improvements in the next stepping.

Conroe is brand new and will most likely have "legs."

Hey I have a lot of AMD stock so I really do, really, really do hope your right!

But the facts seem to say otherwise.

@Elie I hate to burst your bubble but the quad opterons are set to work on the socket F(1207), the statment from AMD about "current" boards supporting quad cores was a misinterpetation(as much as I wish it wasn't)

Looking at what intel has *previewded* and what AMD has shown on the roadmap it seems intel will be ahead when am2 and conroe hit the shops, which suits me fine as AMD will have drop there prices on current stuff to compete. And I want a cheap upgrade to my dual opteron board to dual dual-core

However the fact that AMD has been very conservative with the new AM2 chips in stating they will only go to 2.8GHz makes me think they may have something up there sleaves

I will give a firm opinion on which is better when both are tested by independant body

and like I said a 6 months is a long time

but still its a very good sign, seems to me both AMD and intel have been stagnating a bit lately and intel almost went mouldy

The Intel chips need DDR2, the AMD X2 chips they are comparing to use the significantly less expensive DDR. This impacts total system cost. If you need the fastest and price is secondary concern, fine. But I have $XXX to spend and want the best bang for the buck at the system level.

                Socket AM2 uses DDR2 aswell.

DDR2 here in Canada is selling for slightly less than DDR now.

                512MB DDR400 Generic $49.99
                512MB DDR2 533 Generic $45.00

Thanks Hulk and Marshmallowman for your input, didn't know that about AM2 being a different socket all together, I just ordered an HP 9300 and I think it will last me a while with two dual core 270 Opteron Workstation class CPU's, as I can upgrade to 285's when they are out. I could of sworn I heard or read somewhere that AMD will release a quad core Opteron which is pin compatible to socket 939.

But yes Conroe looks good, I hope they don't cripple it when officially released.

                  Regards,
                  Elie

Sure they will have a crippled version.. what else would they sell as a celeron

What's wrong with the celeron being a reduced version of the premium product?

Nothing really, I just hate to see people buying an intel processor at 2GHz, thinking they are getting the latest and greatest due to bad marketing.. Maybe they will keep the P4 series as the celerons this time around.

Yeah I have seen the same thing - people buying what they think is a really fast/gaming computer, and then when it breaks shortly after () and I am fixing it I find out it is a Celeron or Sempron. What really bothers me though, is the video cards that come with many of the prebuilt computers (or lack thereof) - and stores here are advertising a FX5500 as a gaming card... it blows my mind.

Intel themselves market the Celeron even without the Pentium brandname. Wouldn't any misleading marketing originate from the reseller/OEM?

yes it's the resellers false marketing strategies one should be made aware of, as they do not clearly indicate what exact CPU in "inside"
