  • Testing the Pioneer A03 DVD-R/RW

Got it. I couldn't wait for the drive to be released and since i needed to upgrade my computer, i bought a new one with the drive fitted (note:OEM 103 Version). I bought five Verbatim 4.7 Gig DVD-R disks for £8.10 each. It took me three days to install my RT2000, i found an incompatibility between my soundblaster live card and the promise ATA100 controller card, causing conflicts with the G400 Flex display card. Finally removed the sounblaster and replaced it with a Yamaha sound card from the old computer, system now works, although i still think Premier is a little sluggish.

    System specs.
    Pentium3 1Gig
    256 Mb RAM
    40 Gig ATA100 boot drive
    60 Gig ATA100 AV drive
    Matrox RT2000
    Pioneer DVR103 DVD writer
    Premier 6
    Sonic DVDit 2.3 LE.
    Verbatim 4.7 Gig DVD-R disk

I captured 20 minutes of DV footage in chunks. Edited and rendered. Then i exported as IBP Mpeg-2 file from the timeline. Opened up DVDit created some basic menus and buttons, linked the footage to the buttons, saved the project. Now do i export directly to the drive or create an image on the hard disk. Well exporting to the drive wasn't successfull, not sure why yet, it seemed to go all the way, but maybe its my unfamiliarity with the DVDit software, so i created a disk image instead and used Prassi PrimoDVD to burn to the DVR drive. This went successfully, and only took 8 mins.

    Testing the disk.

PC DVD drive with Matrox software DVD player. Successful.

LG 3200 settop DVD Player. Successfull.

Tiny Portable DVD player. For those of you not in the UK, tiny is a big PC manufacturer who came out with this portable DVD player for £500 and it is very very good. The disk played perfectly.

Please Note: These two DVD players are new, apparently some older players have problems with the general purpoes 4.7 Gig DVD-R disks.

Just to say that some people have commented on the quality of the RT2000 Mpeg-2 codec. The quality of the disk was outstanding, no blockiness and those who withnessed the results were stunned at what i had created.

If you have any questions i hope i can answer them.

    Cheers all

Now that the A03 has been around for a little while (not here in Australia), I would love to hear other users comments on this hardware.

Tony, are you still happy with the performance?

Other questions I would like to hear answered by Tony and other owners are:

    Where did you buy it?
    How much did you pay?
    Any problems?
Is it region, NTSC/PAL, etc. specific ? (what I mean here is ..... can I purchase one from the US and expect it to work in my PC, or will I have to wait until it hits the shelves in Oz).
