From what I understand the Ulead consumer products generally serve as a test bed of sorts for the pro products. The latest version of MovieStudio and VideoStudio always precede the latest versions of DVD Workshop and MediaStudio Pro. I suppose that trend will continue under the new management.
Probably that along with in-house research that shows they will stand more to lose if they fall behind in their "bread and butter" consumer apps since they might lose bundle deals with hardware manufacturers.
Now that the think about it the second reason seems to make more sense.
I would like to see three things in WS3:
1. Better error handling
2. An improved GUI with more user customizing options like dockable windows.
3. A stripped down light version with no encoding or video/audio editing features. Simply DVD authoring.
Of course there are other features on the "would be nice" category such as multi-angle and surround. But I really don't get the surround thing as I would only mix surround in an application really designed to do that. Right now WS2 will pass 5.1 audio through to DVD.
I am editing a rather large music/video project right now in a ahem... competing NLE and I have to say it can edit the video and mix the 30 or so audio tracks I'm working with in 5.1 rather nicely. Right now I'm concentrating on two channel audio mixes but I might try a few 5.1 mixes for the finished DVD. In fact just today I was doing some piano overdubs and I could actually preview the 3 camera edit at NTSC resolution at about 20fps WHILE doing the overdubs, without glitching the audio. This was nice because the piano player could see the band while recording his parts. All that on the old P4 3.06.

Originally posted by Brian EllisI don't see why. They have already released MF5 with these features. AFAIK, the delay is pure management policy.
Tell me where Ulead says they've incorporated COPY PROTECTION into DVD MovieFactory 5.
Here's the PDF description of features:
Turn your life’s best moments into stunning movies with Corel VideoStudio! Get creative with drag-and-drop stylish templates, artistic filters, titles, transitions, and the whole palette of advanced editing tools. Get your FREE trial.
I am unable to find any reference to COPY PROTECTION features in DVD MovieFactory 5.
As far as I can tell, that particular program is a CONSUMER program.
Ulead DVD Workshop 3 will need to feature COPY PROTECTION that conforms to the new technology being developed for the "Blu-ray Disc" and "HD DVD" high definition formats.

Originally posted by Brian EllisYou read into my post more than was intended. There is no way copy protection can be applied to any optical recordable media, whether CD-R, DVD±R or the new ones, that I know of. What I said was that the new ones had already been included in MF5 so there was no reason why they could not do the same for the hypothetical WS3.
Read the features description for Ulead DVD Workshop 2.0:

"COPY PROTECTION"
"ADD COPYRIGHT PROTECTION TO YOUR DVD TITLES WITH MACROVISION AND CSS OPTIONS."
Now read the story about copy protection in connection with professionally-produced HIGH DEFINITION disc titles:
.xyz is for every website, everywhere.® We offer the most flexible and affordable domain names to create choice for the next generation of internet users.
AACS (Advanced Access Content System) is to high definition DVD discs what CSS (Content Scrambling System) has been to standard definition DVD discs.
More on AACS:
Now read about the delays in finalizing the AACS specifications:

I repeat: there is no way you can have copy protection on DVD±R discs with WS2, no way. The only thing WS2 does is supply the interface that, if you have the necessary, very expensive, licence, you can prepare a DLT tape which has the necessary coding incorporated for pressing glass-mastered DVDs. At this time, in view of the situation, and the fact that there is, as yet, no standard for exporting data for glass-mastering HD-DVDs or BlueRays, there is no reason why WS3 cannot be issued with current technology. If it was deemed necessary, the security aspects could be added at a later date with an SP.
However, I ask the question: what percentage of SP2 users have used the copy-protection features? 0.001% perhaps? I'll bet that the other 99.999% used it for burning DVD±Rs, which are not compatible with the technology.Brian (the devil incarnate)

The copy protection features in DVD Workshop are, indeed, ***only*** applicable when one is outputting to a DLT (digital linear tape) drive.
I disagree with your opinion, however, that only .001% of users have utilized the copy protection features.
In addition, I maintain that it is plausible that Ulead may be delaying the release of DVD Workshop 3.0 so they can incorporate a finalized copy protection technology for professional users.
Perhaps it would be possible to add this capability as a service pack download, but that might get in the way of marketing the product.

Sorry, Jerry, I happen to know why it is being delayed and I can assure you that your speculation has no bearing on the situation. I cannot say what the real reason is (NDA).
OK 99.999% may be an exaggeration, but I doubt whether 99% is (remember DLT is not possible on the popular Express or bundled SE versions which, alone, probably outnumber the full version, which came out much earlier). If you go to the specific DVD Workshop forums, such as
I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention the use of DLT (other than ask how to impossibly implement CSS on DVD±R discs) or glass mastering.
PS I've just done a search on the above forum and, indeed, there are a few posts on the subject from 3 individuals who are obviously using DLT. Out of, perhaps, 500 users of the forum (difficult to say without actually counting them).Brian (the devil incarnate)

Well, Brian, if I really cared to know what the alleged "real" reason is for the delay, I could find out rather easily as I still am well acquainted with members of the Ulead staff going back to 2003 - when the company flew me to Los Angeles to meet everybody in the U.S. office.
Frankly, it doesn't interest me. So I guess I'll just wait.
