  • (cheap) DV card recommendation

    short facts:

    I need:

    -firewire connectors (of course)
    -basic software
    -no troubles
    price: ~150$

    I would be glad if:

    -analog video out

at the moment I think about the pinnacle Studio DV (plus?)... any good/bad experiences?

    thanks,
    wulfman

Combine either a Pyro or SIIG IEEE-1394 card with a G450 dualhead display card and you're in the zone. The G450 can output about any codec (DV, MPEG, PICVideo, DivX etc. etc.) to its TV out.

            FYI:

if you're assuming you can't because you already have an AGP card (or an embedded AGP display adapter), you can still install a G450 PCI model. Win98SE, ME and Win2K all support multiple cards.

That way you get your cake and eat it too...

And you didn't say what your display card is.

DVStudio doesn't seem to be a favoured solution, I've seen numerous people moaning about it, and a friend of mine who (stupidly) bought one only to find that it didn't support his camcorder. Would be nice to think that DV is DV is DV, but that would be too simple.

I use an ADS Pyro with a Canon MV20, and have been very happy with the combination (mainly). The Pyro normally co-exists with a G400 Marvel on a Celeron300a O/C'd to 450, and has proved to be the most flexible combination I've found yet.

I would change the videocard as soon as possible (ATI Rage 128) - but we don't speak about my PC (I have a g400...)

                  G450 PCI, yes but...

You still have to be able to make your AGP card be "secondary" which means you lose its DirecX, DirectDraw, and 3-D features.

On W2K no version of the G450 drivers I've tried (Three different systems -- 5.14, 5.32 nad 5.52) produce DVDmax output of a recordable quality from DV IMHO. Its convienent for editing without the camcorder hooked up and works really well with Premiere6 (marginal with MSP6) but the video output quality is clearly better going thru the camcorder than thru DVDmax.

Whereas MJPEG output thru the BOB of my G200 was essentially equal to the quality of the captured analog source (other than an annoying color shift that I had to correct with a Sima SCC box). Thus IMHO, G450 is a useful product for what it does, but it is not in any way a replacement for G200 or G400 Marvel output for tape for people without DV or D8 camcorders. Perhaps the win9x drivers work better, but its moot since we're talking W2K and its lack of Marvel drivers.
