  • MiniDV player for IDE, SCSI or Firewire?

Do any manufacturers out there make a MiniDV tape drive that can be connected using IDE/SCSI or Firewire? I thought for sure Canopus offered something like this awhile back, but I can't find anything on their site.

I'm curious about this becuase it could save wear-n-tear on my camcorder, plus save the hassle of plugging and un-plugging the thing.

Very good question ! I never saw one either, but incase we don't find one, and at a decent price, just transferring them to a VCR will have to do (or CD). By the way, I bought some VCR tapes that say they are special and made for Digital transfers, or better for them, whatever the language is on the packaging. I bought them at Costco for a package of about 7 of them for about $10 or something like that. (If don't have the right price don't nag me, I just forgot because it was a while back).
    ------
    Here they are:
    -------

TDK, Digital Source Performance, DSP, 6 Hrs.
    T-120
Capture Digital Sources (DBS, DV) with highest VHS Resolution and Color Purity.
    HIFI Surround

I've frequently asked the same question and have even sent the suggestion to a number of drive (and camera) manufacturers. Few responded and those that did were negative. It is totally stupid to have to use a camcorder just to play back mini-DV tapes or to record on them (and some don't even allow you to ).

If you have big bucks (I think about $3,500), there is one on the market, but this is 10 times more expensive than it should be. I think it is made by Panasonic, but I'm not sure.

I'm sure the market is there, but no one seems to want to exploit it (unless they think they can sell a zillion in the first month, perhaps?).

Well, Sony offers their GV-D200, which is basically a VCR/TV version of their popular D8 cameras but with no optics. But it does have a FireWire port, so device control from the computer would be possible along with dubbing from any other FireWire device.

I wonder how well built this device might be, considering it's for home use.

Sony does make decks for MiniDV tapes, the GV-D300(msrp $1499.00) and the GV-D900(msrp $2199.00). They are basically the same units but the GV-D900 has a built in 5 ½" LCD screen.

This is all insane, I thought this thread was for like a $39 tape device to wind, re-wind, and maybe some basic play options with jack and plugs, not a professional pro-studio setup. Geesh,,,, I understand we are looking for something but this is getting way out of hand in the price range and features...
This stuff costs wayyyy too much...

Hehe, who ever said DV editing was going to be cheap (especially with the name SONY involved?!? For $4100, you could just go balls out and get a full blown DV<-->MiniDV dubbing deck from them.

I can't believe the difference in price between the MiniDV and D8 video walkmans, though. The electronics can't be all that different, just the loading and transfer mechanisms, right? Unless the MiniDV version is expressly geared towards Pro-sumer users. What the hey is sony thinking?

PS, cheapest 8mm winder/rewinder I've seen on the net was for $15 or so.

No kidding. Heck, I can remember the first 8mm deck I saw a few years ago: $800.
