I flashed the Marvel's BIOS and then loaded the latest drivers and BIOS for the Promise card and things changed a little.
Before, there was a loud static drowning out the normal Windows sounds. Now that static is gone. Before, there was an exclamation point on the Promise card in Device Manager, although no conflict was reported and the controller appeared to function normally. Now that exclaimation point is gone. The exclamation point on the Marvel persists, and the device is indeed deactivated.
I'd try the Promise card in the other machine but now that machine doesn't want to post. What fun.
