  • DV camcorder to VHS

Okay, I still only have Hi8 analogue camcorder ATM, but am interesting in going digital.

I've been looking at the Sony TRV830 (digi8)as this has bith DV in/out and analogue in/out without the need for a widget etc. From what I've read, would this set-up allow me to:

    1) Play old analogue Hi8 tape and "capture" via Firewire

    2) Play old VHS tapes "through" the camcorder and "capture" via Firewire

    3) Edit DV file using Premiere/MSP and record back to camcorder with *NO* loss in quality - then if I wanted to make VHS copy, I could playback on camcorder and record (via 830 analogue out) on VHS VCR

    Advise/comments welcomed.

    Thanks,

    Rob.

What advice are you looking for?

What you say about the facilities you expect is correct - you will be able to do all of these. A proviso on #3 however. There will be no perceptible loss of quality on those bits of your video that you re-render. This is usually titles and effects. Different CODECS will introduce noticable quality loss after a differing amount of re-renders. For video that you don't change (i.e. the bulk of it one hopes) there should be no quality loss as it shouldn't need to be re-rendered. This will depend on your editing s/w usually.
