  • DV & Marvel G400 & DualHead "issues"

I don't know if anyone remembers but I posted before about transferring DV files onto my Firewire-less computer. Thanks to everyone who responded. It all worked okay, even though it took up about 15 CDRs

A strange new problem has arised. I used Vegas Video 2.0d to edit the footage, rendered the whole thing as PAL DV again...When I played it back in Windows Media Player the TV output had the classic jitter - oh wrong field order I thought. I re-rendered changing it to 'upper'. But I got the same result! So I tried the third option in Vegas, "none (progressive scan)". Same result again.

Then I tried checking the 'use field based scaling' in the DualHead options. All three then appeared "normal" but not like video - but also not like 'filmised' video that I'd seen before such as the "remastered" early Red Dwarf episodes.

I then converted the upper field rendered file to mpg2 using TMPEG with a PAL DVD template - and my Hollywood + DVD card played it fine, just like "video".

So basically, what on earth is going on here? Surely one of the field options should have made a difference in Vegas, and what does that 'use field based scaling' box actually do? Please help me out of my confusion

      Hi,

What codec are you using? Also, what type of hard drive setup do you have (RAID0, ATA100, etc.)?

Hi. I'm using the PAL DV codec that shows up in the list of codecs available for AVI compression - so I guess its the Microsoft DX8a one. In the properties of Windows Media Player I've set it to full resolution, 720x576. Hard drive is ATA66, not the boot drive and no RAID configuration.

To be honest I hadn't thought of hard drive performance as being a problem, the video doesn't seem jerky as if the computer can't keep up, it looks like the wrong field order. And I'd really like to know what that 'use field-based scaling' checkbox does in DualHead, and why it has such a dramatic effect.

Just made a discovery, I'm using the new DivXG400 thing. And on lower field the footage sometimes look normal, then looks 'wrong-order', then back to normal for a brief time, then 'wrong-order'. etc etc etc

I've got to record this file to VHS - its driving me mad!!!!
