  • MPEG combining more than 1file ...into 1 file.. and into VCD

Oh no! I used a program to put some MPG files I made into a single file from 3 files. The files were from a move I made, it was 1 hour and 15 minutes from 2 mini DV tapes, I then copied it to a VCR tape. I then copied it using my Matrox Marvel G400 and made the AVI files:

    1)2 GIG
    2)2 GIG
    3)1.5 GIG

Total = 5.5 GIG file size.

Size files (because that's how it came out during the copy processes because of the 2 GIG size limits.

I took the Ligo MPEG Encoder and made MPG files from the AVI files. I used the MPEG-2, because I am going to take it and use my Adaptec CD Creator 4.0 to make a VCD. So, I thought that it might be better than making it with MPEG-1.

I then have 3 MPG files for a total of 0.89 GIG. Much less than the almost 5 GIG of the 3 AVI files. ( I have corrected a wrongly reported number...sorry)

I then took a program that takes the MPG files and puts them together into 1 large file. I used a program called MPG join. That was easy and fast, and free.

I have never made a VCD before, so I am reading experinces and directions.

Well, I was playing back the MPEG-2 (Single) file I made out of the 3 files, from AVI to MPG and it works. But, it appears that the sync of the sound and picture went bad in the 2nd file that was made into the 1 large file from the 3 seperate files. maybe joining them throws the sound Sync off from the picture Sync? You can see the people's lips move at a slightly but very noticable time from the sound in the video. While it makes no difference which program I am using Windows Media Player (for this purpose).

I will be making the VCD over the next day or so and wil find out if it fits on 1 CD, how it works, etc. From Adaptec (Roxio) I got a list of how different size files and types of files break down into size and time, depending on the quality and type of media.

All, in all a lot of work, and I stil did not do much else, no time for editing anhd playing with any othe rprograms like Premiere, Medi Studio pro, and others. I have done a small bit of video work and editing with these programs before, but for this project, my main interest is finding out if taking a tape from my JVC Digital Camcorder, making a VCR Tape copy, and making some computer files and the end reult a VCD to play on CD-Roms and DVD players.

And..by the way...these programs take many many many hours! to render the files with a PIII450 processor and Win98. Sooo...sloooow....AAArrghhh!! soooo slooooow!!

You'll need an MPEG-1 file to make a VCD. MPEG-2 would be for SVCD. No chance you can burn it all onto one disk if it's SVCD formatted and little chance if VCD. As for your audio sync issues, you might want to look up info here on TMPGEnc encoder here in this forum. No guarantee it won't give some audio drift also, especially with MPEG-2 and such long clips, but, it might be better than what you used. There's a wealth of info in past forum posts here about making VCD and SVCD, so it's worth a search or two. Good luck.

      Hmm, strange.

If your final movie is really 75minutes and you use a correct vcd-profile, the final mpeg shouold only have 750MB and fit fine on a 80 minutes CD-R. But only if you really burn it as a VCD, because a data-cd only contains 2024 bytes per sector and a VCD about 2340 bytes.

Rather than messing about trying to join the MPEG's together after encoding, use AviSynth to join the files together BEFORE and feed the AviSynth script to your MPEG encoder. So much easier...

If your player can play SVCD's, and you need to get all on one CD then try creating a VBR MPEG1 (yes, not MPEG2) SVCD (VCD resolution though, such as PAL 352x288 or NTSC 352x240) with BBMPEG . I can easily get between 1.5 and 2 hrs on a single CD using this method and quality is good on TV.

If your new to this though, then maybe this will be a little tricky...

        Get these...

        http://doom9.org/Soft21/mpg/Avisynth-latest.zip
        http://doom9.org/Soft21/mpg/bbmpg12418.zip

For info on using AviSynth see http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/avisynth.html - however the link I've posted above has a much faster (optimised resizing etc) version.

        Good luck...

Thanx for the info. I could not find the AVI join, so I went with the MPEG join, which I then thought that MPEG-2 (as opposed to MPEG-1) was supposed to be better to use in making VCD, but, ended up with a 12 hour MPEG encoding process and the joined areas put the Sync waayy off with the video and sound. So, I ended up delaying the VCD making until I could get a clean join with perfect (no noticable flaws and delays in video and sound) sync in playback. Thanx again for info on better programs and solutions.
I hesistate to do many of these encoding sessions because it takes forever using my PIII 450. maybe it's much faster with a new bigger faster processer.
