that pretty well rules out MS office. But does mean in 10 years, I will still be able to load my documents. or at least pull apart the file.
I can still open 10 year old office documents thank you very much.

I can only imagine the system requirements needed to run the ribbon system without any lag... Who would have thought that you'd need high end video just to run Office apps?
The system works fast enough for me! I see no lags or anything with the ribbon and everything is more or less instantaneous or faster (except for translation, which goes thru' the Internet).

Up to now, my preferred word processor has always been WordPerfect and I've used Word only for compatibility with others. I'm now torn between WP and Word 2k7.

Having used word processors since 1975, when they were dedicated, I have noticed one thing: I can't type any faster into them! (Actually I use a lot of dictation, which is also fine with 2k7).

I'd have no problem working in MS Office 7 as the ribbon works a lot like PhotoImpacts EasyPalette & contextural toolbar. They can call it whatever they like, but the ribbon is just a contextural toobar that's pretty and too high
            Sorry, Doc.

When I saw "O 02" I thought you were making reference to Office 2002.

I'll have to check out OpenOffice 2.

Thanks for the great review, Brian.

              Very interesting!

I was a huge WordPerfect fan, but that program has pretty much lost its following here in the U.S. - except among lawyers and one or two other relatively strong user groups.

                As explained here:

What's really interesting is the "Writer" program... it appears to be a hybrid between a word processor and a page layout application... I'm downloading it now.

                Very interesting, Doc, thanks.

One thing I did discover yesterday with one of my lab PCs running Office 2007. I had to unistall it and reinstall Office 2003 to test some app integration. 2003 after being reinstalled didn't go any more. Found that I had to remove a file called msmapi32.dll that is installed when O2007 is installed but is not removed during the uninstall.

After playing with Sun Microsystem's "Open Office 2" for a couple of days, I can see why Microsoft must be a bit scared.

This Sun Microsystem "Open Office 2" program is FREE.

In fact, it even includes a database program similar to Access.

It includes a presentation program similar to PowerPoint.

And its various programs can read .doc files, etc.

                    Totally FREE.

                    Amazing!

I guess Sun Microsystems still markets the "branded" version, "Star Office" for around $70.

                      Still, an EXCELLENT value:

By the way, Serif's PagePlus 11 just demolishes the current version of Microsoft Publisher as you can see here:

                          And Serif products are available as free SE downloads or older versions as cheapware ($9.99 USD) here;

The great things about the full Serif PagePlus 11 are the following:

                            1. Long document support (Bookplus feature)
                            2. Full unicode support
                            3. Spot color support
                            4. CMYK color support
                            5. Footnotes & endnotes support
                            6. Table of contents support
                            7. PDF import and *editing* support
                            8. PDF press-ready export support
                            9. Photoshop support (clipping paths, too)
                            10. Mail and photo merge
                            11. Enhanced find and replace features
                            12. Enhanced table support
                            13. Vector drawing
                            13. Web publishing support

                            ...etc...

You can import RGB Ulead PhotoImpact illustrations and then convert them to CMYK in Serif PagePlus!

These are amazing features for such a low-cost publishing program.

Yes, you were right, Doc, about the Open Office 2.0 program.

The "Writer" program just kicks Microsoft Word all over the school yard.

Just compare the "caption" feature in "Writer" to the "caption" feature in Microsoft Word.

                            No contest.

I could go on and on.

                                yes.

Though as OO2 can open office files, just be careful on first install/run about the file opening defaults.

But even if you mix them up, easy enough to sort out, and you should be able to open with, using your right click menu for both.
