  • Intel Core 2 looks worth waiting for!

Intel's new Core 2 chip looks to be worth waiting for! Compare the X6700 (~$550) against the AMD64 FX-62.

ExtremeTech is the Web's top destination for news and analysis of emerging science and technology trends, and important software, hardware, and gadgets.

Unless AMD drops the price on its flagship a lot, Core 2 will be a no brainer for video editing.

Of course you'll need a new motherboard, and perhaps new RAM to take advantage of it.

What I want to see is a head to head comparison of Core 2 Duo vs. Xeon Woodcrest.

I would seem AMD has some big plans for 2007, however.

        According to CNET's article...

"In 2007 AMD plans to make more sweeping changes to its processors, including support for QUAD-CORE designs."

        Quad-Core? Now they're talking!!!

        I think I might wait.

It was intel's 45nm not even the 65nm that was supposed to completely destroy AMD. The 45nm is "on track" for 2007 (according to intel). Can't remember when Intel will be doing quad cores, but they are trying for 32-cores in 2010.

Conroe really puts a hurtin' on A64 clock for clock AND Conroe will scale to faster speeds than A64 from all reports and experiences I have read about. I've seen reports of Conroe going past 3.5GHz on air! I doubt AMD is going to catch Intel for a loong time, if ever.

            That's a serious 1-2 punch.

Intel will have quad core for servers most likely in the next 6 months (Woodcrest) and I'm sure desktop versions will follow soon after if AMD has anything to compete.

Don't count AMD out yet. They've got some major announcements coming. They may be behind at the moment, but I don't think they'll quit just because Intel managed to get the lead back.

                  Of course they won't quit.

If not for them Intel would still be stagnating.

I just can't wait to build my Woodcrest monster!

I'm very happy that intel is finally making a comeback. We have some demo woodcrest servers in the lab that are very impressive. It's nice having some competition around again.

Yeah, I've been hearing the rumors about that for a while. It's weird. And to get Naffziger...holy crap. That guy's a super-genius. He's a golden egg, and I'm surprised he's leaving - HP knew how important it was to hold on to him. AMD must have offered him some great opportunity, because I don't think he was hurting for money.
