What to replace Marvel G200 with?

Like a lot of people, I'm not happy with regards to Win2k drivers for the RR and Marvel cards.

I've owned an RR-S and A Marvel G200. I used both for three purposes, with only RGB support in Win2k, I feel I have to find a replacement, and likely not a Matrox one because I remember the period of no NT support, and now the latest Win2k news has really caused me to lose confidence in Matrox.

Anyhow, I do capture and print to tape, which I expect to find with just about any solution out there, but I also use the Marvel for standards conversion. I have my input set to PAL and my output set to NTSC (or vice versa) and use the marvel to do realtime tape to tape conversions. I did this with the RR-S as well and it's one feature that really appeals to me about the Matrox cards.

If I can get YUY2 on the G200, I'd keep this card (I've asked about this in another thread) but assuming I can't, what options are there for me? I suppose I could keep the Marvel for standards conversion and get another card for YUV capture, but that would be very inconvenient.

I like the ATI AIW Radeon, but it took getting one again to like it. I originally got the card in January, but the drivers were bad with VIA based systems. Most of the VIA/SBLive issues have been patched by VIA's latest 4 in 1 drivers.

I am using W2K SP2 as my OS for capture and encoding. ATI's latest Multimedia Center is nice. It has presets for VCD and you can also create custom presets for things like XVCD and SVCD. The TV tuner is nice too, at least as good if not better than my Marvel G200, but I have not done a side by side, just remembering.

Also, with the MS DV patch, I can capture 720x480@29.97fps using UVYV and compressing with Huffyuv without frame loss, but my system has a lot of horsepower so YRMV. You can also use Premeire 6.0 with the patch. Some other VFW based apps will not work though, so you need to take this into account.

Check out the VIVO AIW forum over at www.rage3d.com to get a sense of the issues. Just remember though just like here, most everyone is posting issues, but not success.

Dear Todd,

I am very interested to find out some more details about how to go about doing tape conversions (ie NTSC to Pal and vice versa) using your Marvel G200. I have a Marvel G400 and often get asked to convert NTSC tapes to Pal. Some more details about the process would be great!

The way I do conversions is very simple.

Using PC-VCR, I set the input to the standard I'm converting from. I then set the G200 video driver to output to tv using the standard I'm converting to. I then set PC-VCR to fullscreen. This takes the input, shows it fullscreen, and outputs it in whichever standard I have powerdesk set to.

The only "problem" is that it often requires tweeking of the contrast/brightness/saturation and screen position to get the best output.

BTW, I've seen mention in other threads that the DVDMax feature of the 400 cards allows you to output fullscreen video without needing to have the video playing on your desktop. That sounds like a better solution, but I don't think it's available on the G200 (so I haven't had a chance to try it.)

G200 doesn't have dualhead, which is why you haven't seen a solution published

A lot of people (especially in PAL areas) use the G400Marvel to transcode from one vid standard to another and it seems to be a good selling point for the card. So you'll find lots of references to this subject on the forum (try searching for string "PAL" to start with).

Can anyone confirm that the 450eTV has the same featre that works properly ?

I'd also like to know if the 450 has this feature. Despite being stung by Matrox on the RR-S and NT, and now the Marvel and W2K, I'm starting to think that no one else has products that will satisfy me so I'm thinking about taking Matrox up on the $50 off 450e offer. I'm pretty sure nothing ATI has will satisfy me, and the Hauppage stuff looks very minimalistic.
