    My ideal would be:

    1. Not made by Matrox but by someone who can offer excellent support

    2. Combined graphics/video/audio card (possibly 1 AGP + 1 PCI card) so that there cannot be any interactions

    3. Low cost (say $500 max)

    4. Hardware MPEG2 codec for drop-free capture

    5. DV and analogue in/out in any format

    6. Compatible with all NLE systems, including MSP

    7. Upgradeable

    8. Reliable and universal enough so that even a beginner can get on with video capture/editing, without any hassle, rather than spend his time for six months trying to get it to work, plus countless hours on the Internet, trying to find forums such as this to find answers to his problems.

    9. Able to work under DOS, any version of Windows, Linux, or any other O/S (open source Java drivers, for example)

    10. Able to work with any of the flavours NTSC, PAL, SECAM etc. at any resolution, with conversion

    Dream on, Brian

      (1) Long-time driver support. At least 5-10 years. You just don't throw a video editing card away every time Bill Gates wants to sell a new Windows.

      (2) Decent recording software that maintains lip-synchronicity. Ability to record into "infinite" file sizes on NTFS.

      (3) Hardware compression. Under all operating systems. Absolutely. No buts. What's a Marvel G450 but a WinTV with a built-in cheapo graphics adapter anyway? We can get that from other companies. In fact, I probably will!

@Debbie: Don't they have antibiotics where you live?

          Hi Flying dutchman,

          Antibiotics are no problem here.
Curing Matrox syndromes takes much more than that.

Yes I remember the Zoran DVD addon fiasco, but that's not something I was intrested in. My point is this was old news when Matrox introduced the G400 Marvel and still is a poor excuse for orphaning our MJPEG cards on W2K!

Matrox made a decision that the powers that be consider in their best intrest. This decision has caused me to never trust Matrox beyond the currently released OSes which means I won't be buying any non-throw-away priced items from them. This is the solution that is in my best intrest.

The only way I'd buy an RT2500 now is:
            (1) If I decide XP and its "subscription" and forced registration is not for me (a significant probability at the moment)

            (2) The W2K (or XP) drivers delivered with the card work perfectly and meet all my needs and expectations, otherwise it'll be returned.

            (3) Nothing better and/or cheaper is introduced by another company.

If the MSP 6.5 upsdate is all some are claiming, and its "real-time previews" allow me to over come my current multi-camera color correction hassles I'd probably lose intrest in all "real-time" cards.
