The DLPs are into their second model year..
SXRD has been out for awhile as well.. and the LCD flat panels will be out very soon.. this month or next. Mitsubishi will have two 37" and two 46" models, and Sony will have two 40" and two 46" models.

If it's a waste of money FOR YOU, then I have no problem with your specific opinion and your specific circumstance as it apparently differs from my own.Originally posted by KvHagedornJerrold, do you ever bother looking anywhere but Best Buy? As far as I'm concerned, that Toshiba would be a waste of money.
But I don't need your snide, condescending tone because -- frankly -- it makes you an annoyance that pretty much trashes your first impression.
Understand... spending $378 dollars on a 26" screen that fits perfectly into the available space in my studio for a SPECIFIC purpose was no waste.
1. It receives DVD quality digital channels. CHECK.
2. It displays standard definition DVD movies in widescreen. CHECK.
3. It cost very little. CHECK.
4. It features S-Video and component inputs so that I can use it as an editing monitor for use with standard definition MiniDV camcorders. CHECK.
That's no waste.
You seem to want me to rush out and buy the latest "Sony Betamax."
Bite the wall, fella.
All I can say is that the Toshiba model I referenced provides a nice picture.
By the way, we have Circuit City, CompUSA, and many other stores.
Don't insult me by suggesting I didn't look at other models in other stores.
Of course I did.
And the Best Buy "house" branded TV that I also bought is working great and it cost less than $200. The follow-up experience was a pain, but I got my money back!
Tell me which store you work in and I'll be sure to AVOID IT.

Circuit City, CompUSA, any other bigboxes are all the same. I'm talking about small businesses who actually give a damn about the customer and actually carry the higher end TVs. If I am snide, it's because I have seen your attitude before, and recognize it a mile off. You have your own ideas, and no one will ever sway you from them. Which means you have closed yourself off from a lot of experiences.
BTW, look at my post count. If you EVER ventured out of the desktop video forum, you would have known me long ago.

Actually, you don't seem to have learned a single thing about basic relationships with people.Originally posted by KvHagedornCircuit City, CompUSA, any other bigboxes are all the same. You don't type snide, condescending, "know it all" attacks and then expect me to think you know what the heck you're talking about, do you?
Look, I've worked in TV broadcasting for 11 years as a journalist and the fact I don't want to buy an HDTV now -- when the technology still isn't mature -- shouldn't give you any excuse to berate me for choosing an SDTV model that fits my needs.
It's precisely my experience with TV toys over a decade that I am able to wave off floor salesmen such as those pimple-faced, teenage HDTV peddlers working in local consumer electronics stores.
By the way, Orion manufactures products for eleven electronic brands... not just Toshiba.

Jerrold - that TV gets two thumbs up from me. New "HD" tvs are still sh*t compared the the clarity and color of a CRT such as that. If you are doing viewing in a smaller room where you are going to be sitting closer you simply cannot beat a CRT. It's the same thing with computer monitors - so why is everyone so quick to bash the CRT for tv?
Toshiba is a solid brand and I am sure that is a solid tv that will serve its purpose well. I too, think HDTV is still too premature to go spend $$ on.Q9450 + TRUE, G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2, GTX 560, ASUS X48, 1TB WD Black, Windows 7 64-bit, LG M2762D-PM 27" + 17" LG 1752TX, Corsair HX620, Antec P182, Logitech G5 (Blue)

If I was actually condescending to you, Jerry, I'm sorry about that. We have been selling the better HDTVs for 8 years now, though.. so when do you really think you are going to be ready to dive in?
I grant you that prices have been coming down steadily, but we are reaching the point where the price of a high quality flat panel is close to that of a high quality tube TV of a few years ago. I'm glad you feel you got what you wanted out of that Toshiba, and perhaps I'm a bit of an elitist in this area (a friend and I actually collect HD clips to show on the 1080p DLPs, and in no way do I feel like these TVs are not "worth it") but for God's sake, man.. if this is your hobby, you should not be so timid in investing in something really good!

Thanks.
I've had great luck with Toshiba.
I'm still using a D-R1 player/recorder from Toshiba:
I also had a Toshiba laptop that worked great.
I use the new TV as a simple editing monitor for my current laptop video editing setup.
The TV sits about two and a half feet from my chair.
The Conan O'Brien show is on as I type this and it's displayed in widescreen.
I'll eventually move to an HD setup.
But I'm going to wait another couple of years, I think.
Until then, my 26" screen works fine for standard definition video editing.
Best regards,
Jerry Jones

big HD setups are for movies. If you go big HD, go BIG HD - get a projector.Q9450 + TRUE, G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2, GTX 560, ASUS X48, 1TB WD Black, Windows 7 64-bit, LG M2762D-PM 27" + 17" LG 1752TX, Corsair HX620, Antec P182, Logitech G5 (Blue)

I was really sad to see the Sony XBR960 go away. It's an awesome TV. I agree that CRTs can be excellent as far as color and scalability are concerned. I've had this Sony 24" CRT monitor for a few years now, and the thought of it going out and not being able to replace it is depressing.Originally posted by |Mehen|New "HD" tvs are still sh*t compared the the clarity and color of a CRT such as that. That said, most TV watching tends to get done at a greater distance, so at 12 feet or so, a big 1080p DLP looks just stunning. So does an SXRD. Watching the Discovery channel in HD at work has spoiled me for standard definition. Big high quality TVs will always cost a certain amount, though. How long is long enough to wait for it?

I'll be ready to jump into HDTV when a few things happen:
Broadcast Hi-Def content doesn't look like a mess on a HD display as it does now. Pixelated, blotchy, loads of macroblocking and other artifacts during motion. I have yet to see a great HD broadcast, well maybe a close-up of a frog that's nearly a still frame used to sell HDTV's.
There aren't enough BR or HD-DVD titles available. They're too expensive and the players are too expensive.
No thanks, I'll wait until the technology catches up with my expectation of performance.
I'm with Jerry on this one.
