One of my brothers recently bought a 26" LCD panel that he's using as a computer monitor with his Mac Mini.
It amazes me how many people -- including him -- don't realize that their new high definition flat panels won't allow for playback of high definition DVDs because they're being sold without critical hard-wired copy-protection components.
I explained all of this to him and he was pretty surprised.
Two of my brothers have great professional jobs and they're doing relatively well.
But even with their relatively high incomes, they're shocked by the expense involved in the upgrade to high definition.
Yeah, it's all pretty much a mess.
I worked with an attorney friend the other day.
Now this attorney has a degree in law and a degree in accounting.
He was bewildered and baffled and pretty much helpless when he attempted to do basic video capturing and editing.
He asked for my help and I sat down with him and explained some basic steps.
At Idaho State University, where I work, the Ph.D. professors are pretty darned smart.
But even THEY run into difficulty with the technology from time to time.
The copy protection schemes inherent in the upgrade to high definition -- in my view -- are really going to result in a lot of consumer confusion and ANGER in due time.

What they'll do is make most people hold their noses and give HD a pass. In the end they're shooting themselves in the foot with all th ese layers of DRM, which means a customer can't just plug 'n play..Dr. Mordrid

IMO if someone comes out with a DVD recorder/player that can do menus with created/recorded HD H.264/DivX etc. and software makers follow suit using existing DL discs this would force the issue in the consumers favor. This is where China could be useful, as they were in settling the SVCD standards debate years ago.
This wouldn't bring about Walmart selling DL HD discs right away, but these decks being sold as an HD capable VCR replacement puts them in homes and eventually the content will chase the customers on their terms and not the other way around. That or the studios don't sell HD content, which they can't afford.Last edited by Dr Mordrid; 2 September 2006, 07:44.Dr. Mordrid
