  • Radeon 9600/9700 Mobility Supports Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 Dual Head Display

I'm used to using my MiniDV camcorder as an editing deck.

You know... connect the S-Video "out" of the camcorder to the S-Video "in" of the external TV monitor while sending Instant Playback and High Quality Playback out of the computer via IEEE 1394 to the camcorder's Firewire input.

That works, but it's nicer to dispense with the MiniDV camcorder and go directly from computer to external display.

So today I experimented with the Radeon 9600/9700 drivers utilized by my notebook computer.

I connected the S-Video of the computer to the S-Video of the external TV monitor.

I then enabled "Theatre Mode" in the Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 driver software.

    Voila!

Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 sends nice previews -- both Instant & High Quality -- out through the S-Video "out" of the notebook computer.

It's amazing to me how far we've come in just a few short years.

Remember when you had to buy a special "real-time" PCI board -- expensive -- just to get limited real-time previews?

Now -- with a mere notebook -- one can get several layers of real-time with the built-in video display adapter and Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8.

That should work with any software that uses a hardware overlay in its playback window; MediaPlayer, DivX Player, VideoStudio, MSPro....whatever

    Dualhead also appears as an option in our old Dell C600 Latitudes M3 Catalyst drivers;

Imagine what it'll be like once AMD puts ATI 1000 series graphics into their mobile & desktop CPU's, complete with support for their H.264 playback engine and AVIVO encoder tech (encoding in the GPU)?

That's where they're heading if the merger goes through.

Yep, Doc, that will be amazing (AMD/ATI).

One other thing I've noticed, so far, about my setup.

I can scrub very nicely using *both* Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 *and* Ulead VideoStudio 10+.

When I say "scrub" I mean I can hold down my mouse button and move through video, titles and effects frame-by-frame and back-and-forth and the preview goes out to the external TV monitor. Nice.

However, only Ulead VideoStudio 10+ allows me to hold down my mouse button AND step-through any portion of the video frame-by-frame USING MY COMPUTER ARROW FORWARD/BACKWARD KEYS while sending the live preview out to the external TV monitor, which is REALLY nice.

With MediaStudio Pro 8, using the "J" & "L" computer keys -- even with the mouse button held down -- I can't send a signal via the computer's S-Video "out" to the external TV monitor.

(Only to the PREVIEW WINDOW on the computer screen).

With MediaStudio Pro 8, I *can* scrub out to the external TV monitor using the mouse alone, but when I use one of my hands to advance forward and backward frame-by-frame using my "J" & "L" computer keys I then notice that the live preview out to the external monitor stops.

In that regard, I find the MiniDV camcorder a little bit better with Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 because you can hold down the mouse key and then step-through effects frame-by-frame using the "J" & "L" computer keys and -- this time -- the forward/backward, frame-by-frame action goes out to the external TV monitor.

I wonder why Ulead VideoStudio 10+ offers this refinement while MediaStudio Pro -- arguably the more professional editor -- lacks this excellent feature?

Newer technology in Ulead VideoStudio 10+, perhaps?

I don't know if I'm explaining this as clearly as I should, but perhaps others have experimented with this and have encountered the same.
