Say good morning to the first production run of Panasonic's AVCHD 1080i 3CCD camcorders. That's right, Panny took the drab yet so, so sexy CEATEC prototype and turned her out with some shiny new paint as the HDC-SD1. Fortunately, it's still packing that 12x optical zoom Leica DICOMAR lens in addition to a 3-inch LCD, 1.5-hour battery, and HDMI (1.2a) for output and control with Panasonic's VIERA Link universal remote. The camera utilizes those three 1/4-inch CCDs to record video to SD/SDHC cards for up to 90/60/40-minutes with 13/9/6-Mbps compression, respectively, when toting the bundled 4GB SDHC card. It'll even grab a 1.5 megapixel snap while simultaneously recording if you have the urge. On sale in Japan for ¥180,000 or about $1,531 starting December 1st. Oh, and Panny also announced their HDC-DX1 model which shares the same specs but records to 8-cm DVDs instead for ¥160,000 (about $1,361) starting December 15th. More pics of both 3CCD cams after the break.[Via Impress]

Their high-sensitivity features also allow for shooting in poorly-lit situations - for example, as low as six lux.
    External microphone inputs: YES!

Can't wait to read a full review. If the quality is good....

I posted this over in camcorderinfo.com forums. Maybe one of you know?

I wonder if you can put larger SD cards in it? 8GB would probably be more than enough for me. That would allow 80 minutes of HQ recording at 13Mbps. I hoping the panasonic will surpass sony when it comes to noise. I'm also realy interested in finding out how well the 5 mics work on this camera. I'm glad I waited and didn't buy the SR1.

I don't know whether the Panasonic AVCHD camcorder suffers from the noise issue observed in connection with the Sony AVCHD camcorders.

We'll have to wait for a good review from CamcorderInfo.com.

However, I *like* the Panasonic camcorder BETTER... even at this early stage.

            Why?

            - I like the idea of recording to SD cards.

            - I like the smaller form factor.

            - I love the Leica lens.

Panasonic also remembered the external microphone input!

This will probably be my next camcorder.

Yeah, the more I read about this camera, the more I will probably buy it. I've been drooling over all of the japanese pages today I guess I just need to kick back and wait for a few reviews. Looks like optical image stabilizer as well. I noticed a mic input on one side. I only have component input right now, but I'm assuming it supports component as well as HDMI? It's very tiny, 2.7" x 5.3".

The new Panasonics include HDMI terminals plus AV and component jacks.

Frankly, I think this Panasonic will beat the Sony models because of the 3 CCDs.

I am wondering how much of the lacking image quality of the Sony offerings is due to the glass and/or CCD?

Sony makes quite a few HDV cameras that look better than their AVCHD models.

This makes me think it might be possible that the encoder is actually getting a high quality stream, but the on-board processing hardware just isn't up to the task of doing a high quality conversion in real time?

I like the idea of a 3CCD camera but there are also some low light advantages to a larger 1/3" single CCD as the ones Sony is using.

Of course the Sony AVCHD cameras are a non-starter for me due to the poor image quality.

My fingers are crossed that the Panasonic cams have the newest/fastest processors and show us some truly astounding video quality!

I almost fell out of my chair when I read what Panasonic is claiming about low light.

Their high-sensitivity features also allow for shooting in poorly-lit situations - for example, as low as six lux.
If this is true, then I'm very interested.

                          CamcorderInfo.Com usually tests at 60 and 15.

So it would be interesting to get their perspective on the real-world performance of the Panasonic camcorders.

I wonder when these models will be announced for United States distribution.

You can't break the laws of physics so 3, 1/4 inch CCD's usually provide relatively the same low light performance from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Yes, but it appears the manufacturers are approaching consumer high definition in very different ways.

Panasonic is choosing 3 CCD sensors, 1/4-inch in size.

Sony -- for AVCHD -- is choosing single CMOS sensors (2.1 Megapixel Advanced HADâ„¢ CCD Imager; 1070K Gross).

JVC is said to be working on a new 3 CCD model of some kind; but I don't know if it will be AVCHD or HDV.
