Well after 4 years I'm finally going to replace my Dell 4550 P4 3.06 rig. I'm normally not one to overclock but the reports on the overclocking goodness of the Core 2 Duo chips is too good to pass up. Last time I ran an overclocked rig was back in 1998 with my Celeron 300A overclocked to 450MHz. That was a nice 50% overclock. Stable as all get out and really my first computer that was powerful enough to begin to edit full resolution video.
This time I'm building my own again. Although my Dell system has been reliable and rock solid I'm a little weary of the lack of upgradeability. i.e. non-standard motherboard adn power supply pinouts, being locked out of the bios, etc...
Here's what's at my house on the kitchen table now:
Lian Li 7B plus II case - Really nice Aluminum case, two ultra quiet 120mm ball bearing fans. All edges deburred or plastic coated. Really nice case is all I can say.
Asus P5B Deluxe Motherboard - I like Asus and although I may have to use my external Firewire card, this board uses the TI firewire chipset so it might be okay. I'm encouraged by the fact that my new Dell Core 2 Duo laptop uses a VIA chipset for Firewire and it works perfectly with cameras and my Presonus Firepod, which can be quite finicky.
2 GB Corsair PC6400C4 - The cas4 stuff is a little more expensive than the Cas5 but I have the option of loosening up the timings to Cas5 and having a little extra peace of mind as far as memory stability.
Intel E6400 Core 2 Duo - I'm hoping to bump the FSB from 266 to 400 at stock voltage and move from 2.13GHz to 3.2. I'll report back on my luck... or lack thereof.
Thermal Take Big Typhoon CPU Cooler - This thing is a monster and supposedly very quiet, it uses a 120mm fan. If I'm going to have a chance with a stable overclock a good cooling solution like this is required.
Seagate 7200.10 320GB primary drive - Still haven't decided on main storage drives yet.
Seasonic S430 power supply - Quiet and reliable, didn't want to skimp here.
All I'm waiting on is the ATI AIW X1900 video card...
I'll report back as to how it goes...
