  • HDV In Trouble?

So says former broadcast industry executive Tore B. Nordahl.

HDV is in trouble, I believe. Canon, JVC and Sony keep battling to win customers for their (too) many models of HDV camcorders. By the end of 2006, Canon, JVC and Sony will each have 3 HDV models, for a total of 9 (more or less) professional models. In addition, Sony offers several HDV models in the high-end consumer market. Panasonic will soon be in the driver's seat.

Since HDV is a purely tape based format I won't miss it.

After testing and reading a lot about HDV, I think that's a WalkingDeathMan of codec's.
Something like DV revolution will be better.
MPEG2 is for final work, for disc, not for record and edit.
This will be like Hi-8, a good format but not very usable (in real world).
Something better has to arrive and will make a standard like DV is since 1995 to 2007 (I think that DV isn't sitll death).

I'm very disappointed with HDV. Let's see what happen with new codecs.

And NOW I can say very loud that HDV, probably, will never be a Standard.

AVC-Intra is the best candidate for an HD editing format IMO.

          Leave it to Panasonic.

Agreed Doc. Pretty much anything intra is a good start.

Pricegrabber.Com now lists the Panasonic AG-HVX200 at less than $4,500:

Comparison shop for in . See store ratings and reviews and find the best prices on with PriceGrabber's shopping search engine.

And that camera uses DVCPro HD at 100 Mbps.

              Works for films, too:

No "long GOP" HDV compromises... INTRA-FRAME encoding.

And, yes, by July of this coming year (2007), we'll see the AVC-Intra option, which should be even better.
