As if we haven't heard enough about the iPhone

Read three good articles (when taken together) from the NYTimes that shed a smidge more light on the device:

Apple Waves Its Wand at the Phone,
Steve Jobs Walks the Tightrope Again, and
    The Ultimate iPhone FAQ

Some choice lines from the second of the above:
The device is not currently compatible with the faster 3G wireless data networks that are driving cellular revenues to sharp gains in the United States (although several Apple insiders said the phone could be upgraded to 3G with software if Apple later decides to enable that feature).

“These are devices that need to work, and you can’t do that if you load any software on them,” he said. “That doesn’t mean there’s not going to be software to buy that you can load on them coming from us. It doesn’t mean we have to write it all, but it means it has to be more of a controlled environment.”

During an interview on Tuesday, he said that Apple had not decided whether to enable a voice-over-Internet service like Skype — a potentially divisive issue for Cingular, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone, because it could come at the expense of cellular voice revenue.
Until any real news about it comes out I think that's enough for me on the subject.

Yes, yes, I said I was done posting about this, but I thought this article with comments from Cingular was just interesting enough to further add to the discussion:

The latest news and headlines from Yahoo News. Get breaking news stories and in-depth coverage with videos and photos.

May just be me, but it certainly sounds like Cingular is trying to maneuver themselves into a controlling position on this. Most notably the comments about making Apple bend "a lot" and in revealing that there will be other like devices coming out as a result of the partnership.

Edit: Just found this, http://www.amazon.de/Apple-iPhone-8G...e=UTF8&s=ce-de. No clue how legit it is. And yes, that price in American Dollars is rather close to $1.3k

Sounds like Cingular is heavely subsidizing the fone for the US market or Apple is ripping of Europe..

Something like that I imagine. On the same Amazon site a 60GB iPod with video is 349,90, which is a little more than $450/US ($260 on the US site).

Either that or the Amazon site is wrong - there is a note that basically says that if the price goes down upon release then you'll secure that price instead of the one you pre-ordered under (or something like that).
