I'd like to backup my NTSC SVHS tapes and some laserdiscs. I don't really have time to capture and do extensive filtering and encoding (or I'd choose h264 over MPEG2), so I'd like to do this with a DVD recorder. I'm told Panasonic decks deliver surprisingly good copies of even VHS tapes.
This also because they seem to have excellent comb filters, which I'd need for laserdisc copies as the comb filter in my LD player isn't all that good.
The problem is, does it work well for NTSC, for I am in PAL country. The specs of the Panasonic decks like the DMR-EH56EG show they can record in NTSC, but it's not clear if the 3D combfilter is also fully NTSC capable or works in reduced 2 line mode when dealing with the foreign format (as I know some devices did in the past).
From the salesman I got a very thorough "huh??" when I asked about it.
So I'm asking here: has anyone done backups of NTSC material on PAL DVD decks, and what were your experiences?
Thx
