They are kidding about the first two ???

Over the past year I have tested at home numerous viri checkers. I currently use NOD32. I Tried Kaspersky but removed it after 3 weeks due to bing a resourse hog. Same goes to Nortons. Guess they must be the top two AV advertizers at PC World..

I was thinking the same thing.

I don't think anyone could write a virus as invasive as Norton AV!

I agree in general with the Trendmicro assessment, but I would definitely put AVG above anything by Symantec!

I seem to be having very good luck with Kaspersky... so far.

Kaspersky is good, but it is more of a resource hog than that PC Mag listing made it out to be. I use NOD32 and am very pleased with it's performance.

              Are AV programs multithreaded?

I agree that NAV is the world's worst for system invasion, along with Norton Internet Security. After many year's of use, I finally abandoned all Norton security software a couple of years ago. I did extensive testing of
                a) firewalls
                b) anti-virus
                c) anti-malware
                for
                1. effectiveness, without excessive zeal
                2. updating promptness
                3. invasiveness
                4. user-friendliness
                5. initial and renewal cost
                (in that order)

The results of my testing is that one software suite came out heads and shoulders above all the rest for a), b) and c) with all five criteria. That is the AVG 7.5 Internet Security. This also comes with an anti-spam feature, but I've disabled that as I use POPFile for all e-mail sorting into various mailboxes, including one for spam. It is the ONLY one I find really effective, with a combined false positive and false negative score of 99.8+% at spam detection.

BTW, I used to use ZA for firewall, but it, too, became too invasive.

I have no hesitation in recommending AVG (usual disclaimers).
