Corel VideoStudio 11 Plus: Poor HD Documentation

The lack of documentation regarding field/frame information is stunning.

One such lack in VideoStudio 11 Plus that completely confuses me is the "HD DVD" output templates that Ulead has prepared for those who click...

SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE > HD DVD

Why is "lower field first" specified by Ulead for HD DVD????????

Is this an error?

Or is there a new paradigm for HD DVD that we need to learn?

In the past, most MPEG-2 devices have specified "upper field first."

MiniDV .avi video has always been "lower field first."

Now, Ulead is telling us that "HD DVD" is "lower field first."

I'd like to know if this is correct or a mistake or what.

Man, some better documentation about this topic would be really helpful.

I can't answer your question regarding interlace HD but it would be in keeping with what prododer 2 does. All MPEG 2 stuff that I encode from anything is always defaults to Lower Field First..

The confusing output options in VideoStudio 11 Plus need explanation.

Why, for example, do the "HD DVD" output templates specify "lower field first" when the "HDV" output templates specify "upper field first."

Ulead should explain this in greater detail.

The average video consumer is going to go nuts trying to figure out which is correct.

The average video consumer wants to know the "why" behind this stuff.

I've been puzzling through the program.

Here's what I've learned through far.

The reason my "HD DVD" output template showed "Lower Field First" is
due to the new MPEG OPTIMIZER feature.

Whenever you insert an HD MPEG-2 file into the timeline, you can then
click SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE.

When the pop-up menu appears, you can then click MPEG OPTIMIZER.

This feature then gives you the option to click one button to adjust
the project settings to match the properties of your source video.

If you click the button, then the project settings are adjusted.

Then you can click SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE > HD DVD.

Then you can select either the 1440 or 1920 resolution templates.

These templates are ***adjusted*** according to the MPEG OPTIMIZER's
last settings; so the settings of this template change.

Unfortunately, when I insert an .M2T transport stream AVCHD file
captured by VideoStudio 11 Plus, the MPEG OPTIMIZER remains
greyed-out... useless.

Some people on the Ulead Web board are speculating that the program is
failing to read field information correctly from transport stream
MPEG-2 or transport stream AVCHD files.

They may be correct.

It's hard to tell.

I may now give the Pinnacle Studio 11 software a try as
I'm not satisfied with the AVCHD support in Ulead VideoStudio 11 Plus.

This release -- so far -- I cannot recommend.
