  • GraphEdit: How To Solve Transcode Issue?

    Does anybody here know how to use GraphEdit?

    I have it.

    I'm looking at the graph that gets drawn when I drag an AVCHD (.M2TS) file into the window.

    I can see a problem.

    But I don't know enough about managing DirectShow filters.

    Clearly, there's a problem with this flow diagram that I'm seeing.

    It suggests the demuxer is feeding AVCHD streams to an old InterVideo DVDXPack decoder instead of any of the AVCHD decoders on my system.

    I forgot to mention that my goal is to transcode AVCHD to Cineform .avi files using Cineform's "HDLink" application.

    When I try to use that application, I get no joy.

    The application crashes.

    I'm certain it's due to the old InterVideo DVDXPack program's decoder getting in the way.

    Is there a way to assign priority to DirectShow decoders?

    Or would I have to remove the DVDXPack to achieve a fix?

      Solved it by downloading the DirectShow filter manager utility from www.softella.com and then adjusting the priority of the InterVideo DVDXPack filter to "unlikely."

      Now "HDLink" from Cineform is working like a charm.

        Another tip for those who want to install a relatively inexpensive AVCHD decoder.

        The Cineform Web site lists three:

        1. Nero 7 Ultra Edition ($79.99);

        2. CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra ($99.95);

        3. Elecard MPEG Player with Elecard AVC Plug-In ($70).

        Well, there's a less expensive option that I have found...

        It's the CyberLink HD264 Pack for Windows Media Player ($39.95).

        This works on my system to enable the Cineform "HDLink" application to convert raw .M2TS AVCHD files to edit-friendly Cineform .avi files.

        (Of course, the CyberLink HD264 Pack also gives my Windows Media Player the ability to play AVCHD files, which is quite cool.)

        I suspect the Ulead H.264 decoder might also work; I'll need to do some more experimentation.

        But for Corel (Ulead) software users, these Cineform .avi files make high definition video editing almost as easy as editing DV .avi files.

        Man, I'm impressed.

        I can edit high definition files and preview them out to a widescreen monitor as if I were working on a high-end video editing system.

        So responsive.

        Who cares if the long GOP editing bug ever gets fixed?

        I've radically changed my mind on the use of intermediate files.

        Yes, they consumer hard disk space.

        Yes, it takes time to transcode.

        But their quality is great and -- more important -- editing is pleasant once again.

        Nothing's worse than a timeline full of long GOP files that bog down one's computer system.

          Does it work with Windows 2000? Couldn't seem to find any "system requirements" on the CyberLink web site.

            I don't know; it might work in Windows 2000.
