  • Paramount Drops "Blu-ray Disc" In Favor Of "HD DVD"

LOS ANGELES - Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. will offer next-generation DVDs in the HD DVD format and drop support for Blu-ray, further complicating the race between the competing technologies.
Wow, this would seem to be sobering news for the "Blu-ray Disc" camp.

Amazon is now selling the Toshiba HD-A2 for $238.88.

      Not bad.

Yup, and soon they'll be under $200 at discount stores. I'd be willing to bet if there is a blip in HD DVD sales WalMarts BR decision will be quickly nullified and both will be on their shelves...probably for well under $200.

Remember when DVD decks were over $300 then the discounters started selling Chinese decks (APEX etc.) for $100-$150 and the DVD market exploded? Selling HD DVD at a sub-$200 price could break out HD DVD as well.

          I remember those Apex days.

DVD was hot (and still is).

And I agree with you, Doc, that sub-$200 price points could ignite a similar consumer feeding frenzy for the high def DVD formats.

On the other hand, I was pretty amazed the other day to walk into the local Circuit City where they are displaying standard definition DVD titles, Blu-ray Disc titles, and HD DVD titles.

It was disappointing to observe that both the HD DVD and the Blu-ray Disc sections were relatively small and boring -- with many crummy movies that they would have to pay me to watch.

          Content is king.

They're going to have to offer a lot more diverse content... in addition to the cheaper prices.

Yup. All the more reason that chips like Silicon Optix in conventional players could affect the market.
