  • Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD almost 2 to 1, both formats alive!

Despite rumors to the contrary both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are alive, kicking, and doing battle with one another.

"Through September, 3.01 million Blu-Ray discs have been sold and 1.97 million HD-DVDs have been sold, according to Home Media Research."

Not clear form the article if its world wide or just the US, if world-wide these numbers are pathetic.

How do these number of disks compare to the number of PS3 and Xbox HD add-ons sold?

Is it mostly gamers and gizmo-addicts?

Could only think of three one liners.

The real story is how both high definition format sales trail standard definition DVD sales by a huge, huge margin.

          In other words, NOBODY CARES.

          Why don't they care?

Because they know -- intuitively -- that both "Blu-ray Disc" and "HD DVD" are as dead as disco.

BUT the biggest selling high-def DVD is an HD DVD: Transformers

I thought the article with total sales for each format were worth posting. Jerry brings up and interesting point in that I wonder what DVD sales were for the same period? I would expect the HD sales to be substantially less since the HD players are still pretty low in numbers in homes.

DVD sales were very low until one critical event ocurred; the arrival <$200 DVD decks from China. Remember the APEX's? Not only did they play commercial DVD's but also VCD, SVCD and even MPEG video's burned to a CD data disc.

                An avalanche caused, they did.

That and the later arrival of <$100, and in some cases <$50, decks with even more features (JPG image & MP3 CD's, DivX playback etc.) triggered the DVD explosion and the death of VHS.

That is due to repeat this fall as Walmart brings <$200 HD DVD decks to market. Not only that they've already put a <$50 DVD recorder on their shelves.

                  And its Christmas soon!

HD/Blu is just takin a bit longer because it also means (in a lot of cases) buying a new tv as well). But TV prices are dropping, as are player prices, its getting mighty tempting... I still don't think I will buy a player until I can get a decent dual format player for a decent price.
