  • Ulead MSP6.0VE works on Linux Virtual Machine!

I've been running Linux (Ubuntu 6.06) since it came out and recently installed VirtualBox virtual machine software. Created a Windows 2000 VM and have been using some software development tools in it -- National Instruments LabWindows/CVI (needs Windows) and their CVI for Linux runtime and cross-compiler (needs Linux).

I ran across an old Pyro firewire card CDROM and just for grins installed the MSP6.0VE on it to the virtual machine. Appears to work great! Linux box is "only" an AMDX2-5600 with 2GB RAM and an Nvidia 5600 graphics card using the Nvidia proprietary Linux drivers.

Scrubbing, trimming, and all the basics work great. Produced a small VCD format MPEG and encoding speed seemed pretty good too.

DV import and export I won't even try because: (1) VirtualBox has no 1394 support, (2) the machine doesn't have firewire.

This is very usable for producing short clips and such, and is way better than any Linux native editing I've tried so far -- although Kino works well to import DV, trim the ends, and encode H.264 for YouTube.

Were there any patches I need to find for MSP6.0VE?

I found cinerella pretty good in linux for h.264 stuff.

It would be surprising if software that doesn't requier 3D card/etc. wouldn't run under virtual machine (not saying it definatelly doesn't happen)...now, MSP working flawlessly under Wine, that would be something!

I have tested SwishMax (for Flash anims creation) in Ubuntu 7.10 and works "perfect" (I don't have tested everything) and fast as windows version.
You can preview direct to Mozilla.

Also Premiere 6 (works but I don't tested capture), After Effects 5.5 (crashes) and Photoshop CS (Version 8; WORKS DIRECT!!!!!!).

Tested in Wine. Nothing to config. Installed apps as Windows programs.

With Photoshop and SwishMax working, Linux is more interesting.

Runing is one thing, getting usable performance, is another. MSP6.0VE was very usable in virtual machine, certainly much better than on the P800 I had when MSP6 was "current".

I hate Premiere, but if it works in Wine that is encouraging.

Good to hear Photoshop CS8 works in Wine, still the issue for me will be getting calibrated monitors and printer output that is a good match to what I see displayed. Was tough enough to get "right" on Windows using the Spyder/Pantone tools, so I'm not looking to change this setup in the forseeable future.

Cinerella needs DV files in a Quicktime wrapper. This initial step of converting needs to be eliminated before its really useful for most folks. Cinerella's interface makes me thing Premiere ain't so bad after all.

I'll revisit the issue when Ubuntu 8.04 is out as for real work I stick with the LTS versions.

But the main problem with Wine is it rarely works with the current versions, does it work for CS3 (PS9)? Can't buy CS2 any more from legitimate sources.

Once Linux hits a critical mass, I predict companies will contribute to Wine to get their apps running with it -- near zero cost to them, opens up a new potential market. Although for Photoshop, GIMP could meet my needs if the color management/calibration issues were solved.
